Flames' Glencross suspended 3 games

"Calgary Flames forward Curtis Glencross was suspended Monday by the NHL for three games for his hit on Chris Drury of the New York Rangers.

Glencross hit Drury away from the play in the New York end about a minute into Saturday's game at Pengrowth Saddledome, won 3-1 by the Flames. The Rangers captain had to be helped off the ice.

New York coach John Tortorella expressed anger there was no penalty call on the play.

After the game, Tortorella called it a concussion and expressed his unhappiness with the lack of a penalty call."

...and the beat goes on.

Didn't have the puck. Open-ice, blind-side hit. Shoulder-to-head. Suffered a concussion. No penalty called.

It's at least an interference penalty. I'm a little surprised though, because this issue actually seems to be snowballing and getting the attention it deserves. This next GM meeting will tell a lot.

Wasn't an elbow, so it must be legal.....riiight?

Someday someone's going to get paralyzed or worse because of this trash.

Still tough to see Drury prone on the ice, even if he is no longer a Sabre. The lack of a penalty call is rather baffling, and what was the dude thinking that hit him?

Of course not...it seems the refs don't like Drury.

What an awful replay, couldn't really tell what happened. Looked like a shoulder to the head. Dirty hit.

The only thing dirty about the hit was that it came away from the puck, and for that I am glad they suspended him. I also would again like to rail against the league for permitting players to wear excessive armor that allows seemingly ordinary hits to become knockout blows. How many equipment caused injuries must happen before the league limits the body armor?

Suspend Glencross' shoulder pads for the season.

So what part of putting a shoulder to a guys head is okay? That's a hefty blow pads or no pads.

An unpadded elbow or shoulder (bone) will do more damage than a pad. It will also hurt the hitter more, so you can only hope that they feel some fear of hurting themselves as much as hurting the other guy.

Shoulder hits to the head have always been legal, yet the problem with concussions has suddenly become a major problem. Wanna know why?

Protecting shoulders more than heads - that about sums it up - nice photo's ETC.

I remember my first Lacrosse shoulder pads way back in the early seventies - all cotton, not a bit of plastic or foam. Helmet on shoulder hurt like a bitch, but there weren't any concussions from shoulder to head collisions.

I agree to an extent about the pads, but I did not see anywhere near the amount of head hunting during the '80s. Let's deal with the root issue first instead of the side issues.

Seems like a mass exodus to Punnsylvania with me!!!

The side issue would be the instigator penalty, in this case.

Bigger goalie equipment brought on lower goals per game, much like bullet proof equipment brought on more head injuries. That's about enough improving the game and player safety for the next decade or two of hockey, IMHO. 8-)
