firefly isn't traditional sci-fi in that there isn't a ton of technical data thrown at the nerdy viewers to make them orgasm.
Hey, not all us nerds like technical data in our entertainment programming. I like realism. If I can't suspend my disbelief, I can't really get into a show. Case in point: all people across the galaxy in the Stargate series speak English. Also, aliens having basic human form but funky foreheads. I believe a They Might Be Giants song is now careening around my brain.
What makes for a good TV show are characters. I shall reference Seinfeld and Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
Seinfeld was a show about nothing. But it had great characters and was a smashing success.
ATHF was pitched as three anthropomorphic food items who live together and are detectives. Of course, the whole detectives thing was tacked on only to get it green lighted. It's really a show about three anthropomorphic food items who live together. That's it. It took them all of about 1.3 episodes to drop the detective crap.
After getting into Firefly, I'm saddened it only lasted a season. Then I look and see Chuck is still airing on network TV. What the fuck?
