Gliese 581 g (pronounced /ˈɡliːzə/), also Gl 581 g or GJ 581 g, is an unconfirmed extrasolar planet, orbiting the red dwarf star Gliese 581, 20.5 light-years (1.94×1014 km) from Earth in the constellation of Libra. It is the sixth planet discovered in the Gliese 581 planetary system and the fourth in order of increasing distance from the star. The discovery was announced by the Lick-Carnegie Exoplanet Survey in late September 2010, after a decade of observation.

Allegedly, it "might be able to" support life. If I'm NASA, THIS is the new goal. Fuck the moon, fuck Mars, build a rocket, build a team, and send people there.

Didnt they say that this particular planet does not rotate so one side is always facing the sun? I mean sure I think this is really cool, because I am like a big scifi space nut. So this stuff really excites me.

Yeah, it rotates on hits horizontal axis. Imagine the sun sitting at the north pole. Basically the caps of the planet are uninhabitable, much the same as ours, but because one is ungodly hot, the other criminally cold.

That's assuming they didn't hit something that they were approaching so fast they didn't see on the way.

It's much closer to it's sun, about 14 million miles away, so it has a year lasting only 37 days. It's sun is a red dwarf, much younger, smaller, and cooler. I guess you'd want to live near the edge of the light, but the atmosphere is probably denser than earth's, spreading the heat which would cause a fairly wide livable area in both dark and light. It is about 1.5 times the size of earth.

Humans would have to adapt to living and sleeping in a constant setting, and get used to living until around 800-900 years. There would be a lot more area to explore though, if you have the heavy duty clothing to cover the extreme temps.

I just read an article on AOL saying that they are building and funding a NASA program that is going to send people to mars on a one way trip for permanent colonization. haha

1980 - yeah, I was reading about the wind patters and distribution of heat/cold; it doesn't sound that bad. I wonder what the atmosphere is made of though....

Rut - I read that article too - sign me up!

I hate Earth. Let's go to Mars.

Meh... I kind of like water, though.
