I'm looking for a product that is small enough to carry around for an extended period of time that has an outlet on it with which to plug shit in. Does such a product exist?

They have some small hand crank ones, just search around google for them. They are over 50 bucks but under 100 normally.

But I don't think they are quite pocket sized. I looked into them for band trips to power a computer to watch movies on.

I have an outlet that plugs into my car port, they probably make something like that with an actual battery inside of it that could store 30+ minutes of juice in it.

That's the main problem with what he's looking for.
The thing you plug into your car is an inverter...it turns your cars 12V DC into 120V AC.

Most hand crank / solar portable generators output lower voltage and DC...which is great for charging a cell phone, not so much for inverting and powering a (usually higher amperage) wall socket type device.

Personally, I've never seen such a product, or we'd all be carrying them around.

They have pedal operated ones, but they are too large for what he is asking.

yeah, that's what I mean...I've never seen one that could be considered "pocket portable"...and usually heavy batteries or capacitors are involved.

well it's only a little bigger than a deck of cards, so even if you doubled it's size with a battery housing you still have a very portable device. I'm too busy inventing ways to harness electricity from water down spouts so you're gonna have to do this one. ;)

I'm already working on embedding a generator in the soles of my shoes...someone else will have to take the hand crank angle.

I think if I used LED christmas lights and some sort of battery pack, I can power them long enough for my purposes, which is going to HSBC Arena on december 21st clad in blue and gold christmas lights.

LED's take nothing to run Alex, and if you need too, you could always get one of those flash lights that you jerk off to get working and rip it apart and take the positive and negative and run the LED's that way. so viola, pocket generator right there then, strap it to your leg and it will always bounce up and down with every step.

Oh yeah...you should have mentioned your application. LED's are crazy efficient. a wearable or pocket battery pack should handle your requirements.

Well, I guess that depends on how many lights...but it should be fairly easy.

all you need is a 9v battery and you should be able to run them no problem.

I think two strands of 60 LED's each. I have to order blue and amber LED lights online. I'm just wondering if i'll have to macguyver a battery pack, which I'm sure I can do, or if there was something to purchase

Do something like this...
http://www.breskin.com/led1.htm
or this...
http://www.breskin.com/writing/intro1.htm

you can make a battery pack by simply taping batteries together and wiring their leads together in the correct order...or buy a rudimentary 4 or more cell battery holster pack from Radio Shack...like this

^^ hell, I have extras of those things in my garage...handy little buggers.

Should be easy.*

*a basic understanding of electricity and circuit design would be helpful

yeah, I can solder stuff and have a very basic knowledge on wiring. The light strands I'm buying are already wired to run on DC power anyways.

You could actually probably use a hand-crank generator for your application (like one to power an emergency radio/flashlight). Go buy one of those emergency flashlights from walmart and hack it up ;)

Yeah, just use a few AA batteries in a holder. Since you said the LED's are already set up to run off DC (all LED's run off DC, so in an AC strand, it's just a matter of bypassing the voltage regulator), just put them in line. Should last plenty long enough.
