I accept that the odds are highly in favor of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe (I am also personally willing to believe it). However, it's very extremely unlikely that it has visited earth.

At the speed of light, it would take 4.24 years to reach the closest star to our sun, Alpha Proxima. One, there is no hint of habitable planets anywhere around this star (or the others close to it - Alpha Centauri A and B). Two, if there was technology to travel at the speed of light, it would also run the risk of a catastrophic collision along the way. It's highly doubtful that this speed is either achievable or even practical.

The closest habitable planet, Gliese 581, is 20.5 light years away. What are the chances that it has intelligent life with light speed capability? Same goes for planets further away, but after a certain point, "aliens" would have to target earth as a destination and start the journey well before humans even came into existence. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to see humans here (somehow) and then begin a journey and get here by now.
.

This.

And to go back to previous arguments I've had about the space program, read 1980's post again. If humans were ever to flee Earth to "live" on another planet, it would take generations and generations just to actually make it to the destination planet. Then God knows what kind of technology it would take to actually live there.

Anyone who says the space program is justified because we need to explore our options as a species when we can no longer live on this planet...pass me some of what you're smoking.

I didn't even mentioned the limitations with food and fuel. Then there is the stress limits on not just joints, but the material itself used to make a spacecraft capable of near light speed. It's not practical. No matter what form of alien life might be out there, these are "universal" problems that may not be solvable.

For us, I don't mind spending on technology we use to "see" out into space, but I share your skepticism on spending money for actual long-term travel. I think it's truly a lost cause.

I dont understand why you take so much on faith (religion), but regarding life on other planets you'll 'believe it when you see it'?

I also don't see why you would automatically assume I believe in God. I've never said I did, I've only stood up against the existence of God being attacked.

Dude, wtf, have you had a stroke or something? Havent we had multiple threads locked because you identify as a christian and me and various other people have tried to debate religious stuff with you? I'm not just pulling it out of my ass that it's kind of a logical inconsistency for you to believe in god on faith, but not believe in aliens because you dont have proof?

No, I never said I was Christian. I've said it is wrong to bash Christianity because you don't believe in their beliefs.

the multiverse is so vast that i dont think we will ever be able to meet them, but i would put the odds in favour of them existing

This is fucking pathetic dude. When it's convenient for you, you bitch out and get a thread locked claiming 'religious persecution', but then when having a logical inconsistency pointed out to you in a thread about aliens, you actually DISOWN the religion you feel so strongly about so you're not forced to confront the argument? WEAK.

Yes, I said I was Christian. I actually forgot about that comment. To be honest, I, a believer in God yet still a "Wait and see" person, am not a full blown Christian. In the span of time from August to here, in April, I have changed my views a tiny bit. I was grouping myself with Christianity because I am fond of the idea of god, but not devoted to it like most Christians. But the discussion was mostly pointed at bashing all religions and the general belief in a God or gods, and so, after a while, I just decided to be a "I believe and am fond of God, yet I do not know if there is one, so I'm not really devoting my life to said God".

I know, I'm a fucked up irrational person. But even in this quote I'm not going full blown faith.

Quote:
I for one just say I believe in God and that's it.

I really never showed any big amount of faith. Just like aliens. I can't prove they're not real. I can only sit back and wait. But, I can choose to BELIEVE they aren't real. Like I can believe God isn't real.

And, I, as a believer in a God, think saying that the belief is a crock of shit is absolutely ignorant, so why am I a bad guy for sticking up for religious tolerance? I believe in God. It offended me. Hell, I didn't even bring religion up here. YOU did. Because I believe in God but not aliens I'm stupid?

Yankee makes a valid point.

However, that's enough of this thread. It's clearly headed for shitstorm territory.
