Thanks for understanding, Squanto. It always seems like we're the last one to close, after every other district around us is closed.

Is the weather THAT much different on Grand Island than it is in Buffalo?

When it comes to lake effect snow, yes.

the lake effect here is odd. its occurs on the lake sure, but about 20-40 miles in is where it really gets nasty.

WTF just happened?

I think the following qualifies as a "Buffalo Story", doesn't it?

I went to work the day of the storm this week, even arrived 5 minutes early, which is good for someone who hasn't lived in snow country for almost 30 years. The people who've lived here all their lives were calling in left and right. I drove 20 miles per hour in a whiteout to get to work because after calling the emergency line for closures all afternoon before I left, we still had to come in. The heart of the storm on Thursday was right where I work. North and further south of where I was didn't have any closures until the lake-effect shifted further south the next day.

Upside: I got to work for an hour, then they closed the building and I was granted "administrative leave", which translates into a paid day off. Poor suckers who called in had to take Annual Leave and were not granted a free day off. :D

Christmas of 2001! The first year we lived here. Seven feet of snow in Depew, Lancaster, and Cheektowaga and 3-4 feet throughout the city and the Northtowns.

I jumped out of trees into the snow. It started snowing the night of Christmas Eve and didn't stop until December 26. My father got stranded at work for three days.

I remember talking to my brother about that. I couldn't believe 7-8' of snow. I lived here during the Blizzard of '77 and thought that was the worst. I couldn't even comprehend 8' of snow.

On an unrelated note, why can't I multi-quote? I check the box above the profiles/responses of the people I want to quote, then hit "quote" on the last person I checked, but only get to quote the person's check box on the last one. Does that make sense? Someone please advise. Thks.
