The coroner can list "natural causes" but it doesn't necessarily paint the whole picture. Basically, a coroner and a criminal investigation play off of two different sheets of music. A coroner doesn't have to explain the heart attack, just conclude that a heart attack ultimately caused the death. Since a heart attack can fall under a "natural cause", that's what is being listed without any further info that the coroner doesn't know or doesn't have access to.

A criminal investigation will look much deeper into underlying causes, such as the extreme amount of prescription drug bottles that were present in the home, or even illegal drugs that she was rumored/known to have abused in the past. Details about prior/current eating disorders could potentially explain the death. That's not a criminal issue but it's also necessary to eliminate any possibilities before concluding the case. Eating disorders weaken the heart and are a common cause of heart attack/cardiac arrest.

The results of a criminal investigation probably won't have much effect on the coroner's report. No matter what caused the heart attack, it is still an internal disease of the body, regardless of how it was provoked.

Think of it this way - a coroner determines what caused the body to die, the cops determine what provoked the cause.

I'm personally wondering if it may have been H1N1 considering it said she had a lot of flu like symptoms.
