My son and I have ours up and running without any cam, audio, or speaker problems  We tested it out this morning before he left, and we were both proud of ourselves ;)

My question is, how do I know I have an incoming call if I'm not sitting at the pc? Is there a way to make it make a sound or ring or something? He won't have a cell phone due to text and roaming charges so there won't be a way for him to tell me when he is going to call.

I'm on my desktop 95% of the time that has no cam, audio, etc. I downloaded Skype there too, have it open, and minimized in the tray. Will it start blinking if I have a call? I can always run to the laptop in 10 seconds if I know he's calling and answer it. Hope that makes sense.

Mine makes a noise when it rings. A fairly loud annoying one if I remember right, though I haven't used it in a while. If yours doesn't, I'm sure you can go into the settings and get something that works.

It will have a flashing icon and bring up the Skype screen - However, I caution against using Skype (from professional experience) - It will upload a whole bunch of crap to your PC and force all kinds of ads and adware onto your system...

Skype is oversubscribed and is a real whore, when they decide you've reached your limit (because volume is too high) you're screwed.

And heaven help you once you try to uninstall it. Very balky.

Inasmuch as I don't care for Google Talk...It's actually less troublesome and offensive.

My two.

I don't remember it making any sounds when we tried it out this morning. I just looked at the settings :o Looks like I have to make some choices.

What do you mean? My limit of what? I figured a lot of people used it as there were 16 MILLION+ people on when we used it this morning.

I was leary of downloading it for the reasons you stated and cringed when I hit "yes" to over ride the changes to my registry amongst other things.

Is Google Talk VoIP, International, and free?

I felt I wasn't left with any alternative before he left :( Korea supports VoIP only apparently.

I love Skype's addendum; "Not to be used for emergency 911 calls"

Google Talk is free - Skype gets up to 17.5 mil, 20 mil., 23 mil users...you won't be able to connect.

If you've been on for 20 minutes and the level of users is too high for the system to handle, you will be cut off. Limit reached. Typically, the limit is "50 calls" or about 1 hour, if shit gets too heavy.

Technically, any IM or chat that allows voice is VOiP...and is international, by virtue of the interwebz.

Strictly speaking: VOiP is defined by a traditional telephone interface - You have a router that translates the internet digital signal into an analog to-your-home-phone signal. Not a biggie.

I'm reluctant to support Skype because it's unreliable and indulges in deceptive practices.

You might get it to work for you...but, don't you dare rely on it. You may be unpleasantly surprised.

Have you thought of setting it up so that he calls your cell phone through skype when he's ready to video chat? My best friend would do that a lot of the time, or she'd shoot me an e-mail and we'd set up skype dates.

It does make a ringing noise when you're being called, too. Like Alex said, check the preferences if there's a problem with that because it's supposed to.

Skype is peer to peer on Skype to Skype calls. The computers contact the central Skype servers primarily to get a call setup, but once that's done almost all of the communication is directly between Skype clients.

My experiences with Skype have been generally positive. Sometimes the calls can sound a little 'tinny' (like you're talking into a tin can), but that's a nature of the audio compression that they use. (mostly G.729) If you're only using it Skype to Skype, then it's a perfectly good tool. If you're trying to make 'real' phone calls through SkypeOut, you'll find it lacking.

I know a good number of military families that use Skype for exactly what you're using it for Schony. I think you'll be happy with it.

Yes, skype will make a ring tone when you you have a incoming call.
I've lightly used it over the years and I've never had any major issues with skype to skype communications.
