Continuing on with the Brewmaster's collection, this one had a wonderful smell. The taste was a bit strong for my amatuerish pallette. It was very, erm... earthy, and malty. It was bold, but didn't seem particularly heavy to me. Really felt the finish in the back of my mouth. Overall it was pretty smooth. I could see myself acquiring a taste for this one with further exposure.

I've never had it. Do they mention what Scottish style it's made in?
Scottish ales are usually broken up by alcohol content due to tax reasons and are categorized by their tax.

Scottish 40 shilling = light...like an English bitter
Scottish 80 shilling = heavy like a winter warmer

Doesn't say with regards to any of that, Cross. I'll copy what is on the side of the bottle.

Quote:
This is a brew for adventurous ale drinkers: an ale with four special malts, including a rare peat-smoked malt used in scotch whiskies. This unique malt gives Scotch Ale a subtle smoky flavor and deep amber hue. This is a big, malty brew with a long smooth finish.

Yikes...they're being pretty bold using the peat smoked rauchmalt.
It's really easy to go overboard with that stuff. Most brewers would opt for beach wood smoked malt.

They're being pretty bold selling it too....rauchbier isn't for everyone. How smokey was it?

Guess I could have been confusing smoky with earthy. Like I said, the taste was pretty bold and strong.

I'm a big fan of the Sam Adams Scotch Ale, as well. Well, I'm a huge fan of Scotch ales in general, so I knew I was going to like this.
