My first memory is walking up those steep concrete stairs at the Aud, turning around when we got to where our seats were, and thinking that if I tripped, I would surely die. It was the first Sabre season, and I was 8 yrs old!!!

Just looking at the sports pages in the "Schenectady Gazette" and reading about Pierre Turgeon, Dale Hawerchuk, and Dave Andreychuk...

Yeah I recall reading Box scores in the Post (sub)-Standard here.

One memory that sticks out isn't a very nice one. Being a Blackhawks fan at a young age, I hardly ever paid any attention to the Wales Conf. I knew the Sabres existed obviously, but never really watched their games. Usually caught their highlights on TSN the next day, but this one game I remember watching and I wish I had missed it.

March 22, 1989. St Louis is in town. All I remember seeing was the St. Louis & Sabres player crashing into the net and then the slasher flick ensued. I remember watching it in real time and couldn't believe what I was seeing. Clint Malarchuck bleeding out on the ice. Soon enough, they cut the feed on TSN and went to commercial. Creepy as it seems, it was during that game that I kind of took them on as my 2nd team. That time, as well as the 1993 playoffs against Boston, the May Day goal. Watching that game with my dad and remembering how insane the fans went when Bourque was deaked out of his jock, followed by Andy Moog not knowing what to do against Brad May was absolutely amazing!

I’ve always liked this team and have had a special spot for them since the Malarchuck injury. But my first memory as a Sabres fan can be summed up with; "Oh, now do you believe? Now do you believe? These guys are good, scary good!" The game against mother fucking Ottawa. My hate for this team was unreal during that run and I wanted Buffalo to win that series so bad. Pommer’s goal in that playoff sealed the deal and an official Sabres fan was born.

I don't remember how old I was, but I used to sit with my mother and watch the games. She was a big fan of "King Kong Korab" (#4? Mid 70's?) I think Jim Schonfeld (#6?) the captain back in those days. )No, I didn't do my research to back up the numbers I mentioned. Too lazy. Besides, the thread is "Your first MEMORY.....", so I am going with what I remember, even if it's not correct.
At one time, I'd memorized all the players and the positions they played. (I couldn't recall any of them now, save for a few).

She would get extremely involved in the game. I recall one particular incident where she was displeased about either a play or a linesman's call and pitched one of those black plastic bar ashtrays at the t.v.

Fortunately, I had the foresight to duck. (I was sitting on the floor watching.)

I didn't have cable growing up, so I had to resort to memorizing the sports pages...Never got the Albany Times Useless (Union). Gotta love the Gazette

I was a fan of The Bisons, and of the early Sabres teams. I started going to games in 1972. The "French Line", later coined The French Connection, had just been put together. Ramsay and Luce had just been put together, though Larry Mickey played on the RW at that time.

The team was further energized by two rookie defenseman; Jim Schoenfeld, and Larry Carriere. Schony revitalized a veteran defenseman named Tim Horton.

The first two games I attended were against The Atlanta Flames, and The New York Islanders. I felt a wholeness at The Aud I had never felt before in my 11 years. I was hooked; float line and sinker to The Sabres, and to The NHL.

My father had created a Monster he would later lament; as it obscured my destiny as the son of an English Immigrant to embrace soccer the way he had. I have had far more success in playing soccer than I ever did playing hockey, and that's okay, as I started playing competitive hockey too late. That wasn't my choice.

The passion for hockey is still there. This is why I feel a certain kinship for those who were there when this original passion began. Hell, my one son's name is Tim; wonder why.......... ;)
