Can somebody help me understand why Buckeye fans/alumni refer to their school as THE Ohio State University, with a huge emphasis on THE? I can't think of a good reason for it and it just comes off as kinda stupid to me. I could understand this in a state like California, for example. If the Cal fans/alumni referred to their school as THE University of California, it would still come as sort of arrogant, but at least I would understand that they were trying to differentiate themselves from the many other fine, big, prestigious universities in the state. This is not the case in Ohio. There are no other universities nearly as big, prestigious, well known or as athletically successful as OSU in Ohio. Are they so insecure that they are worried about the University of Akron becoming the top university in the state some time soon? Or Toledo? It's like me saying that I'm the greatest Sabres fan in the history of my neighborhood. Big deal. I'm the only Sabres fan in the history of my neighborhood.

The actual name of the school is The Ohio State University, so they're not adding anything there. It's just arrogance and cockiness. Same reason that twits from Miami say they're from 'The U'.

look, ohio state is a good school. it is. but yes, more so then any other university, there is a sense of entitlement and arrogance, with notre dame being a POSSIBLE exception. and, im a michigan fan, and im completely aware michigan has a high per-capita of douchebags around its fanbase as well.
