I think the best think for you to do (probably) would be to work on your cardio first (slowly).

Missy and I are gonna start going for walks. I wanted to go on runs right away, but she's not so down with that.

Put in about half an hour of running today. Need to eventually extend that into a full hour and get someone to do free weights with.

Actually dude, starting off you're best off just walking 25-40 mins. You reach that 60-65% optimal fat burning zone at that range anyway.

People who rely on running right away often don't see great results because your heart rate gets into that 75-85% range; and it then becomes an intense aerobic work out, that burns out all carbs and proteins first, then goes to fat cells for energy. And since I'm sure there is one person who doesn't believe this; I'll tell you my source is Michael Thurmond, and the AHA (American Heart Association) says the same.

Plus starting out, it's still a decent paced walk, about 3.5-4mph, but you can still chat and such while doing it, which helps make the workout go quicker.

Agreed. That's good gouge. Any exercise you can maintain at a strained conversational pace is great (not sucking wind, but not having a laughing-giggling-back-and-forth-riot). My usual issue is that I tend to try to push the pace, and I can't always find someone to run with.

I wonder if Maddox has ever figured that some people who point out their own puns do it to be self-deprecating.

i tried going to the gym today and it lasted all of 20 minutes (for the second time). according to my friend, what i was doing attributed to my short session. ill ask all of you and see what you think.

The first time i went i did the leg press (3 sets of 10 at like 190lb). went to an abdominal machine and did that (dont remember the weight but by the end of the last set i was feeling it little). i then went to the row machine and after those sets i developed a sever chest pain in the lower center of sternum. it felt like i took a straight up punch to the chest. i thought it was just because i was was pressing to hard against the pad on the machine that prevents you from going forward.

So i went again to and and did things a little different. still did the leg press (same weight and set) went to do the bench press. To be a cop in illinois you have to be able to bench 90% of your body weight one time. i wanted to see if i could. i tried it once and failed. i then went to just above my normal weight and attempted 3 sets of 10 at 130lbs. i got about 2.5 sets done before my arms died. after that i went and decided to run a little. i got .33 of a mile before my chest starting hurting again. i stopped and tried to walk it off. the pain got worse, i started getting dizzy and slightly nauseous. i sat down and tried to catch my breath. after 5 minutes of sitting there and not getting much better i made my way outside hoping fresh air would help. i was out there another 5 minutes before i was okay enough to drive home.

i know that im not in the best of shape and i have horrible cardio. but i was always able to lift and run without this sharp shooting pain in my chest. my friend said that i should have started with cardio to warm everything up then go from there. i looked up my symptoms what fit best was...i lost it. but it was essentially something were my heart isnt getting enough oxygen and the only remedies were rest or nitroglycerin (yea, i kno).

anyway, anyone have any ideas?

Yeah, see your doctor because it sounds like you may have had a small heart attack. Not to be all doom and gloom, but seriously, not good.

there wasnt any pain in my left arm or really left side of my body at all. that would seriously suck though.

Well you could have pulled something badly, but the location of it seems weird after the rowing machine, which works your back. Plus dizziness, nausea, etc... Better safe than sorry.

Work is doing a Biggest Loser type contest. I asked one of my co-workers to be my team mate. We weigh in tomorrow. I don't want to lose a lot, just get back to the weight I was at a year ago. Its a short term goal I know I can meet. At that point I'll make another goal.

Phil has said a few times that he wants to play tennis when it starts to get nice. I'll have to bring my racket back from Syracuse this weekend.

30 mins on the bike, 2-10minute Tony Horton Workout DVDs, I'd say I've earned the right to boast here...

I'm getting pretty rock solid man...really excited to see these kind of results

Nice work Jay. I need to borrow some of your motivation. I'm real good about working out on weekends and days off, but workdays...

Its supposed to be 80 in the Capital Region...I guess I'll throw out a mile jog for the first time in a year. Good to get away from the pool and fitness center for a while
