1. I doubt it. Laptop motherboards are so specific that they usually won't fit in the case for another laptop. Quick Google search shows the motherboards are a different shape.

2. Possible, but not likely. You can try resetting the bios (can't leave it disconnected), but usually if the motherboard is shot, it's shot.

Have you seen this? http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu ... c=en&cc=us

1. What S2S said.

No matter how similar the models are, unless they're identical (seriously identical...like same revision of the same model made in the same month) I really doubt you'll be able to do a motherboard swap.
That's also not the sort of thing I'd advise the untrained to attempt...laptops are filled with delicate things that break easily :D

2. You should be able to disconnect the BIOS from the battery or the BIOS chip from the motherboard without causing problems (in general).

well, i read that people had similar problems as i do (the HP DV series, 2000, 6000, and 9000 all were built with shitty motherboards.) and they are no longer under warrenty. however, people with motherboard problems were able to remedy this by unhooking the BIOs, which, i have no idea why, but thats what i read. ill see if i can find it.

third down

"If your technologically sound it can be a simple fix. There is a design flaw in that series of laptops that causes the lid switch wire to fail. I suggest unplugging it since HP can't fully fix this flaw, and it's not as difficult as you may think. Simply follow your user manual to the point where the keyboard is taken out, now you should be able to see the plug, hidden under the corner of metal. Here I'll post a link to a forum so you can see a picture http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=108320 just look for juisyjuice's post. Just remember you might want to take it down further than the keyboard so you could get easier access to plug, it can break. Also if it's in your warranty shoot for that just call up HP and go. Good luck I had a horrible time figuring out that was the culprit on mine later.

im getting a new HP soon, but i wouldnt mind having this ole boy up and running for trips and stuff.

What they're unhooking there is the little switch that tells the computer whether the lid is opened or closed (not the BIOS, which is 100% required to be hooked up BTW).
I suppose unhooking it could solve that problem if that's what's happening to you, but there's 1 catch with that fix: You'd have to turn the computer off or manually suspend it every time you want to close the lid and stop using it.
I guess that would fall into the "minor inconvenience" category.

Not really, no. You could use openoffice.org though - a very capable and very free alternative.

oh yes. she went bad in early august.. had someone look at it and it was the motherboard. i read online that there are some tricks to remedy this, but for the life of me find those original finds.

its sorta mute, as im buying a new laptop anyways, but i wanted to get this ole boy up and running so i would have it for drinking trips and what not, and if something happens to it, oh well.

after the little windows vista logo comes up, and it goes to my desktop, it just stays black, with a cursor on screen.

So it does boot?
If it gets all the way to your desktop I highly doubt you have a motherboard problem unless it's driver or device specific.

Have you tried booting to safe mode?
Try booting an ubuntu live CD and see if that works.

If you see *anything* on your screen, it's considered "booting". Watch the screen as it boots and see if you can find the option to boot to a Recovery Partition - all newer HPs have one. Run through the recovery.

I would also like the name of the dolt that looked at your computer - he's giving people like me who don't advertise as "professionals" a bad name.

Ubuntu, knoppix, hirens, any live cd at all. you can find .iso files for them on thepiratebay.org or demonoid.com.

If you make it all the way to the windows desktop....the computer boots.

From what it sounds like to me, you have a driver / device issue that would be easily resolved by re-installing windows and all your drivers.

You're problem is an OS problem, not a hardware problem as far as I can tell.

Do you have a recovery partition or a windows install disk?

Right, which most often indicates a corrupt file, be it a driver or .ini. I'd suggest (if you don't need to save/back up any data) trying the recovery console first. I have a dv2842 that I've never had any issues with (though I did downgrade it to XP).

the dv series has a built-in recovery partition :)
