Oh shit, he brought up barleywines. I love me a barleywine. I've been really into Young's Double Chocolate Stout, to talk about a different stout...my homebrewing buddy turned me onto it and it is delicious with and without all the Car Bomb fixins :D

What Phil said.

Remember, Guinness IS on tap at my pub, and perfectly fits my everyday, drinking man atmosphere. However, if Guinness were to (God forbid) come out with "cherry-berry" or "cappuccino surprise", rest assured they shall never touch my tap lines!

I'm pretty sure all of the world would rise up against Guinness if they did.

Guinness is still a 4% light beer no matter what the color.

I can give you a 9% Imperial IPA that would curl your toenails.
more alcohol per pint is exactly what the working man would order.

At EBC in Fredonia, they have an absolutely excellent scotch ale that tops out at 9.4 that is like an angel's kiss. I could drink that all night.

They've got a chocolate cherry stout that rings in at 9.1 that, ETC's disapproval of fruit flavorings in beer or not, would get you drunk and get the girl you brought with you drunk too :D

Beer is not supposed to taste like wine, though, Cross. Also, it depends upon what the working man would have to spend for a beer...these "niche beers" can be rather pricey. Joe Sixpack doesn't usually go to California boutique bars after work to drink beer, you know. ;)

Well I can argue macro beer doesn't really take like beer at all...or anything else for that matter.
You're supposed to be able to actually taste the malt and hops ;)

You do know most American light lagers got their taste during WWII to please the working woman's palate right?

Oh no man....those breweries have been around for that long but recipes have changed a lot.

Quote:
The primary reasoning for the use of rice in the domestic market is for its ability to reduce the cost of production. Rice in the brewing process destroys the subtle flavors of hops and barley present in most American lagers. Rice gained popularity in the domestic brewing market during World War II due to grain rationing on the home-front. Most breweries were unable to afford the necessary amounts of barley required for production and so began using rice as a filler. This also had the added benefit of lightening the flavor of beer making it more appealing to the new female workforce. After the war, the process was not changed and as a result the style changed as a whole, losing many of the subtle flavors that had characterized the style.

Bwahahahaha!!

World War II was no help either. Grain again became scarce due to the war effort of feeding hungry troops, along with the fact that a very large portion of our beer drinking population was overseas again forced the breweries to economize. Again they were forced to make the choice between less beer with more ingredients or more beer with less ingredients. Only this time they noticed an interesting trend - as the beer got lighter, more women were buying it.

http://www.homebrew.com/articles/article02220201.shtml

The fact of the matter is, what American breweries used to brew, is called a "Classic American Pilsner".
You've never had one and I've never had one.
There are no commercial examples available although some homebrewers still make it.
It's a much maltier pilsner, slightly darker in color and brewed with a fair amount of corn.

All this talk of Guinness reminds me of my Birthday. We were driving back to town from finishing up xmas shopping and found this little watering hole in Pictou, NS. that served Keith’s Dark. Can't remember the % of it, but it had the taste of Guinness, but wasn't as heavy, nor did it have the thick taste. All I remember was drinking the pitcher me Lass bought me for my birthday (it was 2 in the afternoon and she was the D.D.) and thinking to myself, wow. This was an amazing idea! :D

Getting back to the beer of topic, however, Sam Adams is considered "Imported" up here in Canadia. I have to say, I am a big fan of this beer while watching our home games. When we're on the road for whatever reason, I switch to the Moosehead Dry Ice. Hand in hand, the stronger beer helps me to cope with the home team announcers (should Harry and RJ not be available)

Looks like I'll be drinking a lot of Dry ice in the next 2 weeks

I fully support further research!! :D :D :D

I like New Belgium brewing CO's Fat Tire Ale about best, and had a cider made at Coopersmiths in FT. Collins, Colorado over several annual fall productions, which was dry and crisp with a faint tart apple taste (6% alcohol) - it was a favorite. I also greatly enjoy Guinness in the winter, but don't care for it when it is hot out for some reason.

I economize during Sabres games, and usually consume Bud or Beam!!
