And that's displaying nothing more than a 'Commercial Break' screen.

Let me just add....flash is only part of the problem. I work in a coldfusion / flash / air house right now.

Lazy developers are just as responsible for your streaming video performance.

Yeah, I know. I am good friends with a guy that works a lot in flash / air. He complains a lot about having to come in behind others and clean up performance robbing sloppiness.

I'm not naive enough to blame EVERYTHING on flash, but it's just so shockingly inefficient it's surprising.

Honestly, part of the problem as I see it is the adobe languages are...well...easy.
Flash communication server and coldfusion are nothing more than abstraction layers riding inside of java.

So, it's for people that can't afford actual java programmers but can afford CF/FCS programmers.
Cheap programmers = crappy code.

We had a project once that involved a complete code overhaul because coldfusion is CASE INSENSITIVE. A god damn programming language case insensitive.
So when the company wanted to start running linux, guess what?

That's how lazy and easy those languages are.

I did most of my programming in C++ back in college. Nowadays, I do mostly little Perl programs and scripts, because Perl is superior for text processing, and little scripts to interface with network equipment. I still have more of a grasp about how to code than one of our 'programmers' that works on our core backend shit. This guy knows PHP, and learned Perl on the job, and not very well either. He's the perfect example of someone cheap who knows enough to make something work. He was just in the Times last week because he wrote a Twitter bot that yelled at people if they wrote in all caps. Bragged to us about how good a programmer he was, even though I was able to duplicate his shit in about an 90 minutes. It only took me that long because I didn't know anything about the Twitter APIs because I HATE Twitter.

The only reason youtube works on the iPhone and other mobile devices is because it encodes all files in mp3 format now, instead of using flash for the phones.
