Honestly desktops are a thing of the past, and laptops is what everyone wants anyways.

A Tablet I can only see still being big in the medical field or something like construction, not for everyday use really, or even businessmen.

Desktops are definitely not a thing of the past. They will be around for as long as computers are, IMO.

They will be, but it seems more people are wanting laptops over desktops.

I used mine for more than I thought I would. Kinda surprised actually. There

And desktop PCs will never die. Ever.

I mean, now that laptops can weigh like 3 pounds and are easy to carry around obviously there is a desire for them over desktops in that regard. In terms of business, gaming, any sort of media production, etc a desktop will never be replaced by a laptop.

For people our age, laptops have their advantages over desktops. We are on the go a lot, obviously a laptop is ideal for college, etc. I would say our age range is probably the greatest in terms of desiring a laptop over a desktop.

I don't agree at all. It's still easier to build a desktop gaming rig anyways. But yea, I guess I did forget about the business aspect of things.

Eh, I know a lot of firms I worked for have started going strictly to laptops; it's better for them to have the option of portability than not at all. That, and doing bulk purchases and for the power needed for standard business apps, the price point of a laptop ain't that bad.

I work in a test lab, running a lot of virtual machines. A desktop is a requirement; the ability to add RAM and hard drives nearly on the fly is crucial.

I just wonder how it functions is all? Does it flow freely like an iPad or is it clunky?

Apparently the OS is a tablet-optimized version of the OS6.

I agree with you, but I think it largely depends on the industry, though. Mobilized computing in the tech industry is a must, but you also need to have powerful desktops, as well. From what I can see as an aspiring accountant, having a laptop is a must for those who travel to clients and such. If I was a tax professional, though, I would want a laptop since I would be at my desk a lot.

It really depends on the business.

Unless you're gaming, (some) programming, or doing visual/architectural/3D design, I don't see a need for a desktop.

In any environment that demands high data security, desktop > laptop.

I'll give you that one too; however, whole disk encryption and mobile storage encryption can be implemented to mitigate that risk pretty easily.

I just don't see laptops being as ergonomically designed as well as desktops and thus being better for the workplace environment. And by workplace environment, I mean one that is stationary. I wouldn't expect an auditor to lug around a desktop to clients, for example.

I'm just saying I think desktops still have their place and always will. For the home, I think people prefer having a desktop first and then buy laptops if they travel or go to school or something like that. It's just my personal opinion from what I've seen. Desktops with monitors are cheap to come by if you buy from Dell just as a laptop would be. I've seen complete desktop packages for $400. You're obviously not getting a great machine, but it's good for everyday purposes, just as a $400 laptop would be.

I dunno. Just my opinion.

Yep, I hear ya. But in the same breath, you can add peripherals to a laptop just the same.

Yeah, I get what you're saying for sure. I just think both have their places and that if people have the space and lifestyle, they'll get a desktop over a laptop in most instances. Like, my mom uses the desktop at home a lot. Her fiance bought her a laptop and she just never uses it. But she doesn't travel, go to school, or have a job where having a laptop makes more sense.

In the end, it comes to preference for sure. I definitely prefer the portability of a laptop since I'm a student and have to work in more places than just my desk. Plus I'm lazy and like being able to be on the internet while I'm laying in bed. I feel, though, that when I'm older and have settled into my house, I will opt for a really nice desktop (for gaming and such, don't really like gaming on my laptop) and have a laptop, because I'm sure it will be convenient for work and travel and the aforementioned being lazy and sitting in my bed with it. :)

My biggest point, though, is that desktops are not obsolete. They're just one of a few options a consumer has. Laptops have taken off in more recent years, but that is because the technology and design is getting better. They are a lot more customizable and it is easy to tailor one to your needs. Technology is a wonderful thing. For as long as computers are around, desktops will be, too.

From an IT guy's perspective, I'd rather deal with a desktop. It's company property that I have full control over 100% of the time. I don't have to worry about a sales guy taking it home for a weekend, lettings his kids install Teletubby flash games loaded with viruses, and bringing them back into the office. (Yes, it would have antivirus on it, but it's kinda hard to protect from zero day vulnerabilities when the AV can't connect to the AV policy server inside the corporate network.)

The desktop in the enterprise will not go away for a long time. Laptops can be very good alternatives, especially with cloud based storage models, but the desktop will hold it's place in most workplaces for many years.

That's another thing. A lot of businesses are skeptical (and consumers should be, too, actually) about laptops because if they got stolen, there could be sensitive information that could get into the wrong hands. I remember there was a laptop stolen/lost from a Cornell official that had names, student ID numbers, and social security numbers of students. Huge, huge, huge potential for problems like that. I know if my laptop were stolen people would easily be able to access my personal information based off what I store on websites alone.
