One may argue that's the impetus of her "celebrity"...or notoriety.

How exactly are you defining "celebrity"?

Red is Patridge, Blue is Palin

I knew both in name, but I didn't know who either of them they actually were until I looked them up. I knew one of the Palins unsuccessfully tried to use Jesus as birth control, I just couldn't remember which.

I thought the same thing as Kathy Griffin though. I don't watch DWTS either, but I watch Castle which comes on right after so I caught a few minutes of the show here and there. Thought boy, Palin is looking round.

With those google stats I would take news volume as a good indication of how many "normal" people know of one over the other.

Depends on the groups you hit.

People that follow the news and have more interest in politics would know who Palin is. (Us)

People that don't give a shit about the news, but love their garbage reality TV will know who Patridge is.

I'm simply saying that Patridge has 6+ seasons of being a main cast member in a reality TV program, and two movie roles BEFORE doing DWTS. She's at least been working in the entertainment business as a career, even if she is a B/C grade 'actress'.

All of the DWTS stars 'contestants' (if you want to call them that) have careers in music / movie / TV before doing the show. Bristol Palin did not.

Yeah I wasn't disagreeing, I just threw it up there for everyone.

To go back to the original post, I don't think Kathy Griffin (or any comedienne) has any responsibility to be any kind of role model for young women.

I like Griffin, I think she's funny and I thought the joke was funny and I thought the reaction was funnier.

@Squanto you're nit-picking.
It's not called "dancing with the stars who are established in the entertainment or sports industry."

Hell, didn't the have Tom DeLay or someone on one season?

He's not a damn "star" by any stretch of the imagination...he's a crusty old career politician most American's can't pick out of a lineup.

Even Tom DeLay did SOMETHING in his career.

What was Bristol's career before this again? Exactly.

Quote:
A celebrity is a person who is easily recognized in a society or culture.

Generally speaking, a celebrity is someone who gets media attention and in certain circumstances show an extroverted personality. There is a wide range of ways by which people may become celebrities: from their profession, appearances in the mass media, or even by complete accident or infamy.

I don't see any mention of professional or personal achievement being a prerequisite.

my lack of knowledge when it comes to "pop" culture is something I'm proud of. I actually know about Blogoy.....avouch from NPR....and Palin being on tv come to think of it.

When it comes to movies I know a lot, tv not so much.

Not a role model, but to stop perpetuating the idea that anyone not a Vic's Secret model or Calvin Klein heroin junkie is fat. I suppose that subject is debatable though only due to the number of celebs who make thoughtless remarks on the subject. What isn't debatable is that Griffin has been sliced and diced a number of times with obviously mixed results to look thin and (still) fugly. Not only is that hypocritical based on her efforts under the knife, but hypocritical having seen the lack of return on her investment.

Do you not see the sad irony in that?
