That is a win/win scenario for sure. One thing AT&T schools the competition on.

AT&T has a modified phone upgrade system. It's 18 months by default, unless you have an iPhone and stomp like a spoiled child because you can't get the new one ever 12. :p However, if you have a more expensive plan that isn't just the cheapest one, you can get a new phone faster, as quick as 6-12 months with the top end plans. Their reasoning is actually legit; if you spend more every month, they recoup their subsidy faster since they're making more money off you.

Even though they suck in general, this is a decent idea. You stay happy by having new phones, they stay happy by keeping you locked into contracts.

that is a good idea. i like it.

We'll see if they keep this up after Verizon gets their mits on the iPhone. Sure, there will be plenty of people who won't pay the term fee to leave AT&T, but there will be a shitton of people in major cities where AT&T can't even complete phone calls that will bounce in a heartbeat.

I know 3 guys at MIT that intentionally never upgraded away from the 3GS just so they wouldn't be in contract when Verizon got some version of the phone. I wouldn't be surprised that there are lots of people who share that opinion.

I'm actually upgrading to the HTC Aria next week, they have a pretty sweet special running on it now, 129.99; and I get $100 on a visa gift card to use wherever.

I was thinking about the I-Phone 4, but I really like HTC products, and I hear Android 2.1 is way better than the shitty 1.7 OS I have.

HTC or Samsung now?

I think I'll get an Android phone now, not the iPhone. 4.5 inches of screen. :D

I talked to my friend Rich this morning, he manages an AT&T store in Rochester, he says the phone he gets returned the most is the HTC Aria, he told me to go with the Samsung Captivate, better phone, 1ghz processor, 16gb internal memory...basically the closest thing you can get to an Iphone with Android 2.1 OS; thinking thats what I'm gonna get now. Just waiting to get paid for the 2 weeks I worked before Christmas.

well I would upgrade the firmware, just saying 2.1 is what the standard OS is on the phone.

That's the one major downside to Android. The carriers have too tight a handle on the distribution of the updates. The fact that they're close the 3.0 and some people are just now getting 2.2 is telling.

I agree Tom, I really considered the Iphone 4 (scary right?) and am just more of a fan of the Captivate and the 1ghz processor in it. Plus the ability to use the phone as a wireless hotspot is the definition of an added perk.

i could use my storm as a wireless hotspot, but it wasnt worth the 30 extra bucks to me.

remember, jay. phones with duel core processors are coming out, and HTC just announced a hell of a phone for ATT.

its a damn shame the nexus one was handled so poorly. apparently, i beat the iphone 3gs in every test they held. great phone, just handled so badly.

In my view, just because a phone has a dual core processor doesn't mean it's instantly awesome. Dual cores = more processing cycles = less battery life. Unless the software that runs it is optimized to not show down a cores not in use, it's going to be detrimental.

Plus, most people don't know the difference between a dual core and dual whores. They just want a phone that does what they want it to do. This is how Apple got to where they are. They don't brag about their phone specs, they show that their product works. That appeals to a lot of people.

Or download the source and root your own phone, although that's past the capability of most folks.

And gogo $50 inventory cleanout. :)
