Xanth is funny, but I don't know if he'd get the puns at his age.
I'd leave off Robert Jordan, personally. I found him to be very comples & drag...
I read The Hobbit in 4th grade. Loved it!
The VERY FIRST "fantasy" my dad ever read to us kids at night was A Princess Of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Swords & chivalry, no sex, just awesome stuff for the imagination. He had most of the original hardcovers of that series, too. I think they reprinted Princess a while back but got the cover "wrong". :?
I remember my son reading the Redwall (?) series- little fuzzy animals with swords. He loved it.
My daughter loved the Lemony Snickett stuff.

Obviously it has to be asked, is it kid friendly?

I'm almost positive it's kid friendly; It was a long time ago that I read it though. The puns would probably entertain you, Phil, but the story itself would be good for the boy. For example, in Ogre, Ogre, the main character (an ogre) gets infected with Eye Queue, and the story is about him trying to get rid of his sudden intelligence :D

To be honest, they're easy reads - you can probably make it through one in a few days of your own time, so you can determine whether you want to censor it or not... I really wish I remembered more man.

Fantasy written at the level of a 7-year old, you say? How about George W Bush's Memoirs!!! sorry - couldn't resist.

Phil, you mentioned CS Lewis. I read the Narnia Chronicles when I was a kid and really enjoyed it.

Narnia, the Hobbit, a Wrinkle in Time (don't remember if that was fantasy). I don't recall what age it would be appropriate for, but the Elvenborn series might be another. There's the Eragon series, but I didn't find it all that good.

Ooh, The Dark is Rising. That was really good. Definitely check into that one. I remember I loved it.
