From an IT guy's perspective, I'd rather deal with a desktop. It's company property that I have full control over 100% of the time. I don't have to worry about a sales guy taking it home for a weekend, lettings his kids install Teletubby flash games loaded with viruses, and bringing them back into the office. (Yes, it would have antivirus on it, but it's kinda hard to protect from zero day vulnerabilities when the AV can't connect to the AV policy server inside the corporate network.)
The desktop in the enterprise will not go away for a long time. Laptops can be very good alternatives, especially with cloud based storage models, but the desktop will hold it's place in most workplaces for many years.
I see and agree with your point of view; but in reality, it's my job to support the staff - whatever makes them happier/more efficient. I'm a policy/planning guy; if there are mobile devices, there are acceptable use policies that are signed and enforced.
I think desktops (in the enterprise environment) will go away as thin clients gain momentum; desktops won't go away in small businesses.
