So he came right up to me, said this is what you'll do. You're gonna get a bike, you're gonna paint it blue.

am I supposed to move this thread?

music is the great equalizer in life. it can speak for ones emotions and whole personality, if people want to dig that deep. thats why music is always such a diverse subject. you get people who dont want to sniff around, and like whatevers on the radio, while i love bands most people have never heard of. in my eyes, musically, that puts me above them. of course this comes off as snobbish and downright asshole like, but when one loves something, they want to show it off.

if i said i love cars, and proclaimed how awesome a pontiac vibe was, and its a "real sports car" while you sit in the drivers seat of a fucking lambo, you are going to make fun of me too. thats why, say im listening to some "do make say think" while some asshole comes in and proclaims nickleback as the best band ever, you better bet the farm im going to mock him endlessly. and on the contrary, metal heads can mock me for my love of indie, post rock, and some old school emo. its a never ending cycle.

oh really? Tell me more about what I like.

Not so much what you like, but your tendencies. To me, Portland is an entire indie city, full of cool and not-so-cool music lovers. An image is conjured up in my mind of bearded dudes in Chuck Taylors with a ridiculous mix of CD's and records in their libraries. You name drop a wicked array of artists, from Gangstarr to Butthole Surfers recently, and I respect that kind of musical diversity.

you're actually fairly dead-on about Portland there. That's pretty impressive since I assume you've never been here.

Not even in the same time zone.

Just got home and I'm listening to some Buttholes right now, a little Hairway to Steven. Can't believe I used to listen to this stuff on drugs at the tender age of 16. Surprised I never went off my rocker and killed somebody after putting a developing mind through that.

That's a great album. I have a numbered copy of the original vinyl pressing.

edit: that's like one of the rarest records I have. Not to be a total geek fanboy.

Should I start a vinyl thread? I've been dying to talk about my collection with someone other than Rud for a long time! :D

That's why I mentioned it ;)

One of my friends in High School had an original copy.

Well, now there are two threads for me to avoid.

Seriously though, this is why I don't talk music here. The pretentious, "If it's commercial it sucks" attitude.

There is a reason mainstream music sells, it appeals to the general public. I'm part of that general public more often than not.

My favorite artists range over 3 or 4 genres of music.

Taylor Swift, Kellie Pickler, Third Eye Blind, REM, Pearl Jam, Cute is what we aim for, Cash, Strait, Flyleaf, Katy Perry, Sublime the list goes on and on. I catch a lot of shit when in a musical discussion with people who are "way into music". I don't get way into it, it passes the time for me, it's something to listen to in the car, it's something for me to listen to at the gym.

I just hate people that always act like "If it's signed by a major label, the artist is a sell out who just wants money."

Fixed that for ya.
I have several friends that are musicians...one is distributed by a couple independent labels.
If you think the consumer is part of the equation that decides what music becomes popular you're sorely misguided.

Note: this isn't be bashing pop music, just commenting on how the industry works.

very true. i have witnessed several good bands fly under the radar for a while, then suddenly, they get picked up by a major label, and that album has 0 feel of the previous albums, and has several "made for air-time" songs on it. prime examples of this are muse and rise against. now, everyone and their dog likes rise against. taking back sunday actually used to be a fun band. now its loathsome.
