If you want me to guess, it meant less soldiers if the guys were banging other guys. Heterosexual sex produces offspring which makes a country more powerful.

Uh what?

What...you never heard about Buddha and his vast army?

Why religions ban homosexuality.

Do you know anything about Buddhism or its core tenets?

Nope, I'm not a professor of theology, but I'm just guessing that when these "rules"or "tenets" were being created, there was a purpose for it. This is only my opinion.

Go research Buddhism before you make any more comments about the need to maintain an army or make a country strong. If only for your own good.

We have a Budda on our front porch with a vine growing around it. Other than that, I don't understand the religion. I think that's pretty much the norm.

Yeah, this... It's upside down.

:(

How is it upside down?

Well, backwards may have been a better term to use.

I've looked into a lot of cases, some high profile, some not. It's amazing how many people are falsely accused of those two crimes in particular, and they are absolutely crucified by society and forsaken by everyone they know all for knowing the wrong people or for breaking up with a girl or for going through a bad divorce or for having a lot of money, the motives are endless, while men who claim to be "men of God" get away with actually committing disgusting crimes like that without being put in that position at all. Liars are believed while actual victims are ignored. It's ridiculous. There's a host of very good reasons that I reserve judgment when things break in the press until their conclusions, when I can read everything for myself... This one concluded a long time ago, and he, like so many others, should have been jailed.

For me I don't believe in God but I do know that religion is a very positive driving force for millions of people. Something that bothers me about this whole mess is that it threatens that positive force and what should be done is a quick, decisive action from the guys pulling the strings high up in the Catholic church. If I were religious I would be even more insulted and pissed because of what inaction like this in the face of such a disgusting crime does to the faith in the eyes of the world. Many people have turned away from organized religion because of this garbage and it sure doesn't make it better when the head cheese turns a blind eye to something so important. I guess I'm just saying that we respect your faith man but the people who should respect it ten times more than we do are essentially hurting it pretty badly.

So is the discussion on the militant, war mongering Buddhists over?

I don't think any religion or culture can isolate itself from war, even Buddhism:

http://buddhism.about.com/od/basicbuddh ... /a/war.htm

To Buddhists, war is akusala -- unskillful, evil. Yet Buddhists sometimes fight in wars. Is war always wrong? Is there such a thing as a "just war" theory in Buddhism?
Buddhists at War

Buddhist scholars say there is no justification for war in Buddhist teaching. Yet Buddhism has not always separated itself from war. There is historic documentation that in 621 CE monks from the Shaolin Temple of China fought in a battle that helped establish the Tang Dynasty. In centuries past, the heads of Tibetan Buddhist schools formed strategic alliances with Mongol warlords and reaped benefits from the warlords' victories.

The links between Zen Buddhism and samurai warrior culture were partly responsible for the shocking collusion of Zen and Japanese militarism in the 1930s and 1940s. For several years a virulent jingoism seized Japanese Zen, and teachings were twisted and corrupted to excuse killing. Zen institutions not only supported Japanese military aggression but raised money to manufacture war planes and weapons.

Observed from a distance of time and culture, these actions and ideas are inexcusable corruptions of dharma, and any "just war" theory that arose from them were the products of delusion. This episode serves as a lesson to us not to be swept up in the passions of the cultures we live in. Of course, in volatile times that is easier said than done.

Sorry for the bump but i had to post this....

Someone in Malta has a sense of humor...and the Maltese press is clueless.

Two billboards in Marsa advertising the Pope's visit to Malta got the unlikely addition of two stencilled images of what looks like a panda. It is not clear why the "artist" in question juxtaposed the bears with the Pope. The organising committee was alerted yesterday morning and it plans to erase the images.

/facepalm

In case anyone DOESN'T know what those bears are, it's the infamous 'pedobear', an internet meme that refuses to die. Anything remotely linked to or which could be misconstrued as pedophilia will get tagged with this.

onto something more constructive

HH Pap Benedictus XVI's Pastoral Letter to the Catholics of Ireland

Quote:
As you know, I recently invited the Irish bishops to a meeting here in Rome to give an account of their handling of these matters in the past and to outline the steps they have taken to respond to this grave situation. Together with senior officials of the Roman Curia, I listened to what they had to say, both individually and as a group, as they offered an analysis of mistakes made and lessons learned, and a description of the programmes and protocols now in place. Our discussions were frank and constructive. I am confident that, as a result, the bishops will now be in a stronger position to carry forward the work of repairing past injustices and confronting the broader issues associated with the abuse of minors in a way consonant with the demands of justice and the teachings of the Gospel.

2. For my part, considering the gravity of these offences, and the often inadequate response to them on the part of the ecclesiastical authorities in your country, I have decided to write this Pastoral Letter to express my closeness to you and to propose a path of healing, renewal and reparation.

It is true, as many in your country have pointed out, that the problem of child abuse is peculiar neither to Ireland nor to the Church. Nevertheless, the task you now face is to address the problem of abuse that has occurred within the Irish Catholic community, and to do so with courage and determination. No one imagines that this painful situation will be resolved swiftly. Real progress has been made, yet much more remains to be done. Perseverance and prayer are needed, with great trust in the healing power of God’s grace.

At the same time, I must also express my conviction that, in order to recover from this grievous wound, the Church in Ireland must first acknowledge before the Lord and before others the serious sins committed against defenceless children. Such an acknowledgement, accompanied by sincere sorrow for the damage caused to these victims and their families, must lead to a concerted effort to ensure the protection of children from similar crimes in the future.
