"An 8-year-old boy was sent home from school and ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation after he was asked to make a Christmas drawing and came up with what appeared to be a stick figure of Jesus on a cross, the child's father said Tuesday."

Sounds like the child's father is blowing this out of proportion. The school district denies his story:

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massac ... us_sketch/

Some interesting tidbits:

Quote:
TAUNTON - City officials sharply disputed yesterday widely distributed reports that a local elementary school suspended a second-grader and required the boy to undergo a psychological evaluation for drawing a picture of Jesus on the cross.

The story, initially reported by the local newspaper, raised questions of religious bias days before Christmas and was broadcast by local television stations and other news media. Making the story more compelling, the boy’s father held court for much of the day at his girlfriend’s apartment, granting interviews to reporters from Providence to Boston, demanding that the school district compensate him for his family’s pain and suffering.

“It hurts me that they did this to my kid,’’ Chester Johnson, the boy’s father, said in an interview with the Globe. “They can’t mess with our religion. They owe us a small lump sum for this.’’
....
Johnson said his son was suffering as a result of the commotion. He said his grades have declined in recent days and that he wanted him to be transferred to the Elizabeth Pole School, the most recently built in Taunton.

“He said he was uncomfortable,’’ he said. “I also think they should give him a fully paid scholarship to the school of his choice. We should be compensated for our pain and suffering.’’

Everything the father says revolves around 'being compensated' for something. This story doesn't pass the smell test. I'm really inclined to believe the school district on this.

EDIT: I'm particularly amused by a second grader's grades 'declining in recent days'. That's such bullshit. :)

Does smell fishy. Stupid internets and 15 minutes of fame. Makes me think of the balloon boy family.

sounds very strange.

I bet even in Rome, Vatican or small villages in Austria and Switzerland NOBODY would care about this .

I always drew pentagrams and shit like that when I was in school and I was never sent to see the psychologist, and those are a lot more offensive than JC on the cross.

I don't get what's wrong with this. It's JESUS. Christmas is about Jesus. Jesus died on the cross. Isn't that related to Christmas?

Yeah, I'm with Squanto on this one... I think the kid's parents are fabricating the story in order to get some publicity/money out of this.

Religion. Its school. The only time religion should be allowed in school is when learning about these religions. It seems to me by making Christmas cards, they were celebrating a religious holiday. Unless this is a private Catholic school, thats bs.

Don't be hatin people. I realize that Christmas is more of the American tradition of good spirit and giving, which I am all for. While I am not Christian, my whole family is so I still celebrate the holiday. I celebrate it as an end of the year celebration of giving and human kindness. A happy winter solstice party where you attempt to make others happy through good spirit.

Festivus for the rest of us would be where its at. Me, Drew Stafford, Jerry Stiller.... we'd own that holidays life lol.

No one instructed the boy or anyone else to draw pictures about Christmas...he did that on his own.

The first post said that they were told to draw Christmas cards. Cards are used to celebrate holidays. Christmas is a Christian holiday. As long as this is purely learning based and as long as they made cards to celebrate other religions (or just celebrate giving and winter for non-religious folk) than thats fine.

Wow.

I'd like for this family to explain to me how money is going to improve his grades. Home schooling from here on out? Enrolling him in private school?

And I thought families only got money in regards to religious matters by priests molesting little boys. This is a new twist. For the record, I'm not meaning to diss anyone's views in this posting folks as I'm catholic myself.

I find this ridiculous.

According to the school that's incorrect. The kids were never told to draw Christmas cards.

Judging by the fact that when I was in grade school 20 years ago they called it "Winter recess" I believe the school.
No teacher would be dumb enough to give a "Christmas" themed assignment.
