Every couple of weeks or so I will give my students a "rumination." To ruminate means the act of pondering or meditating. I ask them a values question and then we discuss it for 10-15 minutes to start the class. It is a nice break from European history (although it often ties into events we discuss in class, such as, do the ends justify the means, which tied into our discussion of the Terror during the French Revolution).

So, if anyone is interested in discussing ethical or moral issues or pondering provocative dilemmas let me pose a rumination question:

Would you rather be extremely successful professionally and have a tolerable yet unexciting private life, or have an extremely happy private life and only a tolerable and uninspiring professional life? Why?

...at this point, either would be a relief.

I am getting fucked at work and fucked "at home"...so, either prong of your proposal would be a fucking holiday.

Cheers.

I may well adopt that, as my epitaph.

Yeah, either would be fine by me as well. I have a dully adequate professional life and a just plain dull personal life although my novel is coming along.

I would rather have a successful career and boring personal life. That's because the career I'm going to be working in, wildlife biology, would be enough excitement for me alone. Plus, I think it would be great to be happy with what I'm doing and still getting paid well to do it. My social life isn't all that exciting now anyway, and I like it like that. I think it would be great to just be able to do all the things I do now, just more lavishly. I could add more books to my collection, buy more video games and have nicer things for my quiet, dull personal life.

I'd much prefer the latter.
My "job" is not what defines me. It's what allows me to live my life.

Agreed. Want to be my boss?

:text-lol: That is a response I've never gotten from one of my students.

When someone asks one of your students what they want to be when they grow up, maybe they should try may favorite answer...

Happy.

I guess that makes my answer easy to guess. Careers are virtually worthless to me(but having a job you don't like isn't an option either). Happiness in my personal life is ALL that matters. I wasn't born to grease the gears of capitalism. My life belong to ME, and I don't need a ton of gadgets and material crap to be happy at all(even though I do have a ton). I'm quite happy just sitting on our back deck on a summer day enjoying our dogs, bird and acreage(and maybe some booze and smoke too!).

Hard to argue with this.

My personal life is quite good right now, and it often helps me get through those tough days at work. All I have to do is think about going home to my wonderful fiancee, my cozy little house, my little kitty, and my HDTV/DVR, and it puts work problems into perspective.

So, for everyone who said they would prefer a happy home life over a successful professional life, is that limited to your current professional life or would you trade domestic bliss for a different, highly successful career, such as being a great musician, or a famous actor, or a world class hockey player?

I would much rather have a more successful personal life

in the end, you work and work and work for pieces of paper.

people are more important than paper

all i want is enough paper to be able to survive and live my life, no more, no less

Money is not always the main motivation behind many people's careers.
