Post subject:  Locked my keys in the car tonight....

So this evening I was a genius and locked my keys in my car while I was trying to brush off the snow. I have no idea how I managed that because my keys were in the car and I can't lock it with the electronic lock because the car was on, so that means I had to have manually hit it. Makes no sense. Anyway...

I called AAA and they came about 45 minutes later and unlocked my car for me. YAY.

I get home and tell my mom what happened. She then gets pissed at me and tells me that she never renewed our membership that expired in November. I was confused because I feel like the person would have told me on the phone that it expired, but since they didn't and apparently my mom didn't renew, what is going to happen? Am I going to have to pay the towing company that came out or what?

My mom was pissed I didn't call her and tell her what happened before I called AAA. So I told her that she could have told me she didn't renew it to which she replied that she doesn't have to tell me everything. I think something like that is mildly important. Not to mention it's pretty cool to get pissed at me when I already felt bad enough about locking my keys in.

tl;dr: I am a moron and locked my keys in the car. Called AAA and they sent someone out. Apparently, my membership expired in November and they didn't mention it on the phone, nor did my mom tell me. What can I expect?

I don't know what you can expect, but here's a little story along the same vein, only worse.

Two summers ago, while up at my in-laws' camp on the lake, some of us drove the party boat across the lake to another camp site belonging to some other family members. They have an excellent spot (top of a cliff overlooking the lake) to watch the fireworks on the 4th. My in-laws drove their van around the lake.

Well, we had our daughter there with us. She was a year old at the time. So once the fireworks were over, it was bedtime. So my wife and I took her parents' van and drove our daughter back to her parents' campsite. When we got there, I knew I had to use the electronic lock on the driver-side door to open the rear door to get my daughter out of the carseat. I wasn't familiar with the van, so I looked down and saw a little picture of a key on one half of a divided door shape. I figured the key=lock, so I pressed the switch in the other direction. My door was still unlocked, so I figured that was the right call. Then I shut my door and went to open the back.

It was still locked. Back to the driver-side door to try again. Locked. I see my wife has already vacated the van. Her door is locked. There's my daughter, looking out at us, wondering why we aren't getting her out.

Okay, so now we need to call for help. Only problem is, we're in the middle of the southern Adirondack Mountains, and cellular service barely registers at best. We can't get a good enough signal to call for AAA, and how would we direct them through all the unnamed dirt roads anyway. So my wife manages to send a text to her father, he drives the boat over, and long story... well, less long, we pry the window away from the frame to use a piece of wire to unlock the door. Nobody's letting me live that one down. I was just mad that they made the door lock picture counter-intuitive, and then when you hit it, it doesn't lock immediately, but only after you close the door. How the fuck was I supposed to know!

My friend/roommate locked her keys in the car in a Burger King parking lot about a week before the semester ended.

Called the non-emergency police line on a recommendation from Campus Safety, who couldn't come because we were off-campus, and five minutes later, problem was fixed.

If I'm in a car that I'm unfamiliar with the locks and feel the necessity to lock the doors, I'll usually crack the window

I'd say that there is an remote chance they send you a bill, but I doubt it. They might have just auto-renewed it or something.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Does your car lock automatically after a few mintues? I know mine does, though I haven't locked myself out yet.

No it doesn't automatically lock at all, but the thing that annoys me is that I would have had to manually lock it because if the keys are in the ignition and I hit the electronic lock, it will pop back open so I don't lock myself out. I really don't know how I managed to do it.

Clairisse accidentally hit the door lock on my pickup, while it was parked out on a frozen lake in the middle of BF Wyoming :o :o :o

I had to unscrew the antenna and pull the door out a bit to hit the unlock switch ;)

Hope it all works out, and don't sweat it too bad, happens to about everyone, sooner or later. Mom might have just jinxed herself really bad :naughty: :naughty:

ah this brings back memories. I pulled the same sort of stunt last year when I went to my old high schools homecoming. I was a tad more stupid though haha. as soon as I got there I just kinda got outta my car and left. A little later on I went to my car to get something, and as I started walking to my car I was searching for my keys, couldnt find em. When I get to my car, I realize that it is still running! and alas, the doors are locked. I must have hit the manual locks as I was getting outta my car. So my keys were locked in my car while it was still running. I could have called Triple A but I knew I had an extra set of keys at my house so I called around for a little bit, my one friend tried breaking in with a hanger, etc. Eventually my one friend was nice enough to drive me home and back to get the other set of keys. But yea, that was definitely not my brightest moment. Not just to lock my keys in the car while its running, but to have walked away for awhile and not even noticed that I had left my car like that. hahaha

so Beth, while I can't tell you what to expect, just know that you're not alone :D love you

I feel your pain.

Today, while snowplowing the driveway (in *balmy* 12 degree weather), and Dog by my side, I lock myself out of the house! FML!!

I can't call anyone, because I can't remember their numbers, because they are in the cell that I do not have with me; it is conveniently located inside the locked house.

And I have to be to work in an hour. I can't call in, because I called in last week.

I have a nice neighbor who let me use his phone to try to track my brother down for my dad's number (he has a spare key), who laughs at me and calls me a "jackass", but gives me dad's cell (after he wipes away his tears of laughter).

Then I call dad, who promptly launches into a tax question. Um...dad? I don't mean to be a jerk, but I am locked out as I clearly stated at the start of the call; I have to be to work in an hour, and still haven't showered. :?

He shows up and laughs at me, too. Oh well, the upside: I am fortunate I live close enough for him to help me.

ps-I have AAA, but it wouldn't have done me any good in this case....just sayin'

When did your membership expire????? This is from the AAA website

Quote:
Once a AAA Member always a AAA Member?

To the member, even one paying late, it might seem that this is true. We will continue to treat them in the 60 days following expiration much like members. If they call for roadside assistance and are in a hazardous location, we will dispatch emergency road service immediately, no questions asked. If they are not in such distress and are not ready to make a renewal payment, we will arrange for roadside assistance at special AAA rates. There is no question that there is residual value in having once joined AAA. But there is a cost to all members for providing this residual value.

Depending on the location and time of day, they probably decided that you were in a "hazardous location."

My car use to lock it self also when I would get out to brush the car off. It only happened everyonce in a while, so I thought maybe I hit the button. It started to happen more often, so I figured something was wrong with it. I ended up getting a key ring where I could remove the keyless entry and kept in my pocket while I got out to clean my car. Oddly, once I started doing this, I think it only did it once since I started doing this. What kind of car do you have?

I drive a 2005 Chevy Cavalier.

My mom called and just ended up retroacting the subscription and renewed it for $88. I'll pay her back for some of it, if not all of it.

I do carry a spare set of keys in my purse and that's all fine and dandy, until I lock my purse in the car, too.

I lock myself out about once every couple of months. Years ago, I started carrying a key in my pocket. It's right there on the counter with my belt, money, and cards....never leave home without it! Plus I have spare, spares. Many keys have a chip in them for security, but any Home Depot, Lowe's, or any place that makes keys, can make a 5 dollar key without the chip that will unlock the door, but wont start the car. As for Mrsrussel....I have spare house keys hidden in my garage (only I can find them) for just that reason. I have locked myself out as well. lol

I also conveniently locked my garage door opener inside my house that day, so my spare was still inaccessible! FML....
