In the same vein: beware of an email w/attachment which purports to be from the IRS telling you that after review of your "fiscal records" that you are entitled to a refund of $XXX.XX, and prompts you to respond. The IRS does NOT communicate via email--because they do not believe it is a secure method of communication. Should you receive this or ANY type of email communication from a source purporting to be the IRS, please do NOT click on any links/attachments and forward it to: [email protected]. As far as your problem with the Trojan, I never had much luck with McAfee or Norton, but I have downloaded and used Avast! antivirus, Spybot, and Ad-aware to keep things at bay, update at least weekly and run each program regularly. Especially if you are on the 'net a lot, you need to do it fairly often. I don't use Outlook Express for my email client, and use Mozilla/Firefox for my browser. I don't know if reformatting your machine (not a dirty install to repair programs that are not functioning properly), but wiping your hard drive and reloading an OS may work. I've found that any time I've done that, seems like traces of the virus remain, and the computer never seems to work right again after that. But that's just my experience. There are many more computer-savvy people than I who could probably better answer your question than I.

go to an uninfected computer, and download Malwarebytes to a flash drive. Rename the install program to something you will know. When you install it, do it in safe mode, and rename the install folder. Run the full scan. Download avast antivirus, again, renaming install program. Save it to a flash drive. Boot the infected computer into safe mode (with networking), and then run avast's setup and scan. Or slave the HD of the infected PC to a clean PC running up to date antivirus. scan the slaved drive and then reinstall. |

Most infections that are worth a damn infect the system restore files as well, just be wary. If it's up and working now, then I'd suggest doing everything I said anyways, sans going through safe mode. You should let Avast schedule the boot-time scan, as well. If the restore worked, congrats, but you just used (most likely) your only get out of jail free card. |

My sister just had the same issue. Let me guess it keeps say something about Internet Security 2010. Like if you buy that program it would fix all these problems. You do not actually have those trogans, you have a massive adware infection. My sister is still trying to clear all the crap. That Malwarebytes program NYI mentioned worked pretty well |

All download.com tries to ensure is that the software isn't malicious, not that it's good. The highest number I've had on a malwarebytes scan was 703. As far as boot camps go for learning PC stuff, I won't ever discount them, it's where I got my start. That being said, there's entirely too much free stuff on the web for learning materials, and the Microsoft market is always hiring... the government isn't switching to Linux any time soon. |
