Exactly thirty-three years ago, we were herded into the High School Auditorium where we sat for hours. Had we only known that was just the beginning of a storm whose memories would last a lifetime. I finally made it home, but my Mother did not. I had the house to myself for seven days :o
Oh man, I feel old.

We were all contained in the HS library - I had a friend who lived near the school, so we jumped out a window and headed to his house. The phone lines were down, so I couldn't let my mother know where i was - when she finally got in touch with the school, I was no where to be found, and she was very pissed when she found out I was at a friends house playing pong and eating cheesy poufs!!! :D

I was 10 years old and camped out at home. I loved not going to school!

I was 17 and had an after school job at a place that sold motorcycle and snowmobile parts (Duryea's in Brockport). It was just down the street from where I lived and I was the only one who could make it into work. I worked my butt off, since we were one of the only places open. All my customers arrived by snowmobile.

I was -9 years old. My Parents weren't even married.

I do remember the blizzard of 92 in Rochester though.

My mother was fifteen and father eleven at that point in time.

Suffice it to say, I was not yet around.

I got the seven feet of snow when I was eleven, though, although that obviously doesn't compare because of more efficient road maintenance, less wind, and not really any drifts.

I'll have to go dust off some old film in my basement. My grandpa took video of people snowmobiling down the 190 with drifts from the ground up to the elevated roadway.

I remember that f*cking storm! It was the storm from hell!

I was 12 or 13 and grounded for doing something stupid-part of my punishment? I had to shovel the fucking driveway by hand! (And we had a snowblower). It is about 50'+ long. My dad worked for the town; ironically, he was a snow plow operator! I swear that son-of-bitch waited around the corner til I cleared the end of the driveway, and then plowed me in!

(Of course, he is now my hero!) ;)

It shaped my decision to get out of Buffalo as soon as I could once I turned of age. It's been almost 30 years and now I am back. You'd have thought I'd learned the first time.

For the annivesary, I plowed the driveway today (well, mainly 'cause it needed it)

Yeah....good times.

It was 2001.

It was fun. I could actually reach the bottom branches of the trees lining my street well enough to climb them; at the time I'd only been living there for a few months, and I really missed being able to climb basically any tree I had wanted because of where I had lived, so getting to do that again was pure awesome. Jumping down into the snow was awesome, too.

My then nine and seven-year-old brothers and I also made a huge hill of snow in our yard and used it to sled down.

Old Man Winter is giving the Blizzard of '77 a nice remembrance today... White-out conditions on my way to school this morning and I was pretty positive I was going to die of hypothermia walking to my car (that was parked 100 miles away from campus in a sketchy factory parking lot because Buff State doesn't have the proper parking accommodations for its students) after my first class because the wind and snow whipping in my face was something that I never want to experience again.

My GF has been taking masters classes at Buff State for 3 semesters now.

She complains about their parking daily.

Every time I've stepped outside the past week or so the wind has taken my breath away, and it continues to do that every ten seconds or so that I'm outside. It's so cold (consistently 10-20 degrees colder here than it is in WNY, but never any snow beyond a dusting I HATE INDIANA WINTERS), and when it hits your face just right... Ugh. Walking to class is so much fun when your entire face is numb. And then when you get inside it's like you just had way too much wasabi or something because it gets that needle feeling. I feel your pain.

I'm kind of glad it doesn't snow here much though because they don't plow 80% of the streets. it's really bizarre. There will be three inches of snow on the ground, and the streets never do get plowed or salted. I'd bet people here are better at driving in the snow than they are in WNY, which is just bizarre.

Don't forget the "Blizzard of '85", either. That motherfucker came roaring in on January 18th of that year and dumped over 33" of snow, 53mph winds and kept me out of school for days. I vividly remember the drifts piled up so high that we climbed on our roof and jumped off into the snow that accumulated right up to the rooftop edge.

That storm also brought us the world famous "6-pack" quote from Mayor Jimmy Griffin, who advised Buffalonians to all stay inside, drink and watch football.

AHHHHH, I remember that game!!! I had one for the longest time but I think my parents tossed it. I remember a drift that went to the peak of the roof of our two story house.

My parents had that game. Was good fun, even though I wasn't born until 78, so I didn't experience the Blizzard personally.

Imagine;
Being able to walk out your second story window.

Attempt to open your front door. If it opened out, it wouldn't budge and if it opened in, all the snow fell in your house.

Huddling around a radio, listening to news that people were freezing to death in their cars and being blown over the edge of the Skyway :o

Hoping there was enough food in your house to sustain you (and any pets) for an indefinite period of time.

Walking on what you thought was a road only to see an occasional car antenna sticking out (if you could even get out of your house).

Not knowing where your parents were or if and when they would return.

Touching signals at intersections.

Not having a computer!
