Who are we to argue?

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – People who suffer a traumatic brain injury from a car crash or other mishap are more apt to survive if they had been drinking at the time of the injury, according to a study published Monday.

The finding "raises the intriguing possibility" that giving alcohol to brain injured patients may improve outcome, the study team suggests in the Archives of Surgery.

It also improves your memory and reduces the chance of Alzheimer's disease.

There's evidence that light to moderate alcohol consumption can improve memory and cognition. Though more research needs to be done, some studies have found that moderate drinkers do better on certain tests of memory and cognition than nondrinkers and heavy drinkers [sources: Victoroff, Minerd]. There may be some long-term effects as well. A French study that followed almost 4,000 people over the age of 65 found that light drinkers, who consumed up to two glasses of wine a day, were 45 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease than nondrinkers [source: Victoroff].

The argument for trauma patients makes sense, as alcohol thins the blood, reducing swelling and compression while continuing blood flow. That being said, I guess the dehydration affect can be controlled by controlling the BAC?

It's also probably why they're in the car crash to begin with...

i'll say this much for every accident scene i've been to, the one who is drunk doesn't end up injured especially if they are the ones who are driving. they seem to always walk away from the scene.

I've been told it's because their body is in a more relaxed state due to the alcohol.

Both observations are true. The whole 'body being relaxed' thing has some merit, but not a ton depending on the wreck.

I've seen some mangled cars that nobody had any business walking away from without something broken, and an intoxicated driver standing there without a scratch.

It's quite sickening how often that happens. You would be surprised.

Plus, alcohol makes you ten foot tall and bulletproof.

oh i know the rear axle completely blown off a chevy avalanche that went over a guard rail. the driver on the bank of the canal, sleeping, who was thrown from the car. the front of the car crumpled, and a cocktail of drugs and beer cans in the tailgate. or the person who hits the semi, car completely crushed, and just steps out of the car. i drove on the scene took a look at the car and a look at the person i think my jaw hit the floor. though those aren't my favourite. my favourite call definitely is the one with the guy trying to set the bathroom stall on fire at the town park and our chief goes up to him and asks " do you need a little help there?" the guy turns around and all the lights are going plus about twenty fully geared and packed up fire fighters are standing there just watching, not too mention two state troopers. definitely hysterical.

it is something with the slower reaction time and the relaxed state. they said something about it briefly in EMT training as the teacher did not wish to dwell or start an argument.

Yeah, I could have guessed that. Considering usually when there's a drunk driving accident, the irresponsible prick usually walks away unscathed while his victims aren't as lucky.
