anyone know anything about tv repairs ?

i have a 27" emerson crt type tv that is about 6 years old....i no longer have a picture on it, but instead have a thin line that runs across the center of the tv horizontally....the line ranges from about 1/8" thich to about 2" depending on the channel i tune into....it is hooked up through a coax cable for analog tv only....

i also get the horizontal line when i put it on the dvd player which is hooked up through av cables......

just curious if it is fixable and how much roughly?

this may be the reason i finally get an hdtv if it is too expensive or not worth it to repair....thanks

Most likely the vertical deflection chip is fried for the CRT - thus the electron beam cannot be manipulated vertically, only horizontally.

It's most likely a fried vertical IC but it's also possible that the power supply to the vertical IC isn't working.

If you're decent with electronics (can locate and solder/desolder small connections on a PCB), it might be worth trying to change the IC and checking the power supply.

If you can't do it yourself, it's not worth paying somebody to fix. The set isn't worth anything nowadays anyway.

Check the specials in the paper or online on flat screens. You can get a 32" flat screen on sale for $275'ish these days..... Maybe not top of the line - but better than the perpetual line across the screen on the old one.

There's a solution. Chain her to the entertainment center. Then you don't need a remote, either! ;)
