The mods have had plenty of discussions regarding the events of this past weekend over the last couple of days. It's ongoing, but there are a couple things we wanted to put forward.

For starters, we would like to agree upon a code of conduct/ban policy.

The general Icehound rule of 'don't be a douche' will always apply, but we would like to put something together that more specifically defines what kinds of behaviors/actions we (all of us) find unacceptable.
This is a democracy (ignore the benevolent dictator in the corner), so we want input from everyone.

We'd like you guys to contribute your ideas about what we should include and we'll go from there.
Outlines and/or drafts are welcome.

For the time being, we're also going to be handling user bans differently (with the exception of spambots and the like) with as much inter-mod communication as possible and a default ban period of 24 hours unless agreed upon.

Just be nice to each other? A different opinion is one thing, but name calling is another. Now, you can't police this shit with 100% efficiency, just like all laws and justice systems, they are flawed. I think the mods are doing a good job. They and all others need to do their personal bs in private chat. I think this forum works very well, and is very well run. This could be a can of worms we don't need. Is CoC necessary as long as we are still a small group? Doubt it.

there has to be a level to which one can bash another team, or country, or not even a race. I mean of course when we are angry we may call ovechkin a russian doutche, but to some it may be seen as classifying all russians as doutches which i am not. or euro trash. people need to realize the power of their words. I mean It's not right to bash another country or group all players as a whole. like saying all european players are soft. People get the wrong idea. Feelings get hurt, and its puts a major log jam to those trying to sort out the problem. I know it seems like common sense but when one is angry or really feeling almost any emotion they tend not to think. Depressed people don't think about all the people they will hurt, if they die, all they think is i'm going to be free soon. It's not that they don't care if they are breaking their mother's heart its they just can't see. sorry it's long. but i think it's important. And i'm not bashing anyone, just fronting examples, and trying to explain myself thoroughly.

i think the CoC is ok. its sad what happened, but its in the past. i wouldnt change anything. i wouldnt mind adding a mod or two, but that might not even be a necessary step.

ban hammer regulations could be made. thats it.

That's what we're looking for.

If it can't be defined, it can't be enforced.

I figure copying the CoC from the WSOD is a good start and editing out some of the things we can do here, like use profanity.

Cock Sucker...

There, I feel better....I agree profanity is great.

I'd say that it should go in tiers of offense...IE.

Tier 1- IE Personal Attacks (24 Hrs)
Tier 2- IE Multiple Offender (3-5days)
Tier 3- IE Continuious Pain in the ass (7-10 days)
Tier 4- Chimp rule, threatening someone with physical violence, continued pain in the ass, complete disregard for the community, promotion of an agenda, driving other members away, spamming, (LIFE TIME)
Tier 5- Continued Tier 4 Viotlations (Public Execution)

just my two cents...I'll even be the guy who dresses up in leather chaps and wears the mask for Tier 5 offenses

I dont know, the 'World Series Of Douchebaggery' dont seem to be the best place to take our CoC from.

Maybe banning should be like firing a nuclear missle, there needs to be TWO mods, each with one key, which get turned at the same time, while entering a code....

I like the idea of tiers.

Yeah, that was a feature on the old boards that never got implemented correctly.

Basically, there were 'warn levels' that the mods could adjust up or down as they felt appropriate. On the back end (which we didn't have access to) you would associate a warn level with some action.

For example, each warn level was 10%. Once someone got to 30% (3 warnings), the back end would auto ban them for say 1 day. At 40%, could be 3 days, and so on , so forth. At 100% , it was permanent.

The upside was that the banning was automatic, no other intervention required. Plus, warn levels could get taken down a peg to over time for 'good behavior' if you will. It was an interesting system, just one that Scott Miner never bothered to setup correctly.

I think there should be some time out policies before bans occur.

If we instantly ban people for stepping over the boundaries, this community is going to lose some quality posters who might make a mistake every now and then.

First offense; two day time out.

Second offense; 1 week time out.

Third offense; permanent ban.

I've moderated numerous forums, and this is always a problem for the closer communities.

From my experience, the tiered system of bans DOES work well. But you have to make sure that the person who is banned does not just go and make a new account (The person will ALWAYS be pissed off to have been banned, in their eyes "Unfairly".)

Just make sure that the rules are clearly defined, so there can be no question whether or not a rule was broken. It needs to be a case of "User A did this" and the moderator can show the exact rule that shows that "this" is against the rules, and what the appropriate punishment is. There can be no wiggle room for the offender (And believe me, they will wiggle).

Lastly, I just want to chime in that I think that more moderators is a bad idea. My philosophy is 2 moderators for every 100 active members. When it comes to issues as serious as taking away someones internets, you don't want power struggles or disagreement between the authority at hand. It has to be a unanimous decision amongst the leaders, and the more moderators you have the harder that is to maintain.

(If you have to keep the number of mods you have now (I don't know how many, honestly)... just assign certain forum patrols. They only have 'jurisdiction' in this forum or that forum, except in extreme cases. Like dirty nasty midget on tiger porn is being posted.)

Man, I'm good at typing a lot and saying nothing useful.

I think when people are banned, they should be given a full explanation as to how their actions violated the code of conduct as well. That way, the reasoning is clear and there are no gray areas.

No disagreement there. That's one thing that was nice about the old boards. A 'banned' user was simply unable to post, although, as we remember, they could still PM. :)

The way things are here, once banned/timed out, you can't login, so a person couldn't read a PM explaining why action was taken. Maybe XC can adjust that, I dunno.

Also, just thought I'd toss out there that I hope we don't end up needing to worry about this stuff all that much once it's all done. :)

I think there should be something in the CoC about what I would like to call a "Thread Intent Violation".

If the original intention of the thread is to talk about (lets say) physics, then I think if a user tries to intentionally go off-topic in hopes to derail the thread their post should be deleted, and the user warned. Three different thread intent violations (on different threads) and you get Tier 1... If it happens a second time in the same thread they get 1st Tier immediately and any successive one from then on just gets the next tier.

Here's an initial draft I came up with borrowing some ideas from you guys and from some other forums as well.

Thoughts?

In general, don't be a douche.
These forums are provided for the community, and we hope everyone will be welcomed. We ask that the site and all community members be respected.

There are specific posting guidelines below we request members adhere to when posting. Violations may result in account sanctions, including temporary and permanent bans, depending on the severity of the violation. Staff and Forum Moderators exercise full discretion to determine whether or not a post is appropriate, and reserve the right to edit, delete, ban and/or take other action with or without warning against any content posted on this site. We also reserve the right to edit this Code of Conduct at any time.

1. No Spam. Comments posted repeatedly in a thread or multiple threads on the same topic, links unrelated to the thread subject and other actions deemed spam by forum moderators will be deleted.

2. No Flaming. Comments deemed as abusive, offensive, trolling, obnoxious or provocative will be deleted without warning.

3. Stay on topic. Attempts to intentionally derail a topic of discussion will be deleted at the discression of the moderators.

4. No advertising. Please do not post threads designed to drive traffic to another site for the purpose of promotion.

5. No ban evasion or multiple accounts.

Use the "report post" feature to notify the moderation team if you believe there has been a violation of the code of conduct.

If you have a dispute with a fellow member or action taken by forum staff, please contact a moderator.

Disciplinary action:
This forum employs a "three strike" policy. Moderators leave notes when an infraction occurs so there is a paper trail for all disciplinary action.

First offense: Offending post or thread may be edited or deleted and the user will be warned. Depending on severity, the user may also be timed out for 24 hours.

Second offense: Offending post or thread may be edited or deleted and the user will be warned. Depending on severity, the user may also be timed out for up to one week.

Third offense: Offending post or thread may be edited or deleted and the user will be banned. All banning decisions will be discussed and agreed upon by at least two members of the moderating team.
