I can't say I'm really surprised, but it's a weird thing to think about.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100308/ap_ ... ng_detroit

Quote:
Detroit officials first raised the idea in the 1990s, when blight was spreading. Now, with the recession plunging the city deeper into ruin, a decision on how to move forward is approaching. Mayor Dave Bing, who took office last year, is expected to unveil some details in his state-of-the-city address this month.

"Things that were unthinkable are now becoming thinkable," said James W. Hughes, dean of the School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University, who is among the urban experts watching the experiment with interest. "There is now a realization that past glories are never going to be recaptured. Some people probably don't accept that, but that is the reality."

Kind of sensible, in a very eerie way.

they are doing this in flint, as well.

do it. return that land to farmland. reduce the price to crazy low, entice people to move there. the one thing they could have kept is some of tiger stadium up.

detroit isnt going to be the largest city in michigan much longer. i feel grand rapids will be, within 20 years. in all the doom and gloom in michigan, grand rapids is a huge bright spot for the state. i should move back there.

Syracuse should do this, they've had to close down parts of the thru way due to dilapidated buildings.

I heard this story on NPR, it actually makes a lot of sense. As people have deserted certain run down areas, it's become too costly to extend governmental services to relatively sparsely populated sectors. Also it just makes detroit look like a freaking ghosttown, too. They want to consolidate all the hold outs (the people who havent moved, even though they're surrounded by run down shit holes) in new areas, and turn the old forgotten sections into parks and stuff.
The main question is how are they going to compensate the people they move? The current law is supposed to be 125% of current value of land, but that isnt really fair since home prices have plumetted with everyone leaving. I figure we'll hear some more news in the coming months/years about people fighting to stay where they are.

this is a radical idea, that i kind of like.... now, if we could only level the east side of buffalo....

BUT i don't know if this fixes the root of the problem.... yes, it helps to shrink the tax base and eases the burden on the city to provide fire, police, etc... but what do you do to re-stimulate the economy there? Is agriculture the way to go? could you get people to "work" the fields? Or would they see it as work beneath them?

I do like the idea of hitting the reset button on some areas...

we certainly need to do something as a country in some of these areas because the status Que. isn't working...

Going back to a farming base could provide food for the homeless as well as some for sale...

the LP of michigan is also the centre of the greenbelt.

with GM starting to turn upward, and crime in detroit way down, its not that bad down there. the real only issue is unemployment and abandoned property. if the unemployment rate falls, detroit will be fine, but with the way the west side of the state is booming... who knows.

Its a recycling affect. Not only on the land and its use, but for job creation.

There's a lot of incredible upside to a plan like this.

Speaking in terms of jobs alone, this plan will create jobs to:
- tear it down
- revitalize the land
- build new farms
- work the fields
- transport and sell the goods
...and that's just agriculturally speaking.
