I didnt see any kinda police work on there... unless im just messed up in the eyes... I do believe that being a state trooper is a good paying job since you get 65K your first year... |

That depends on what state you're talking about. 65k is very high for most state troopers. Some states have "state troopers" that only enforce traffic laws or do drug interdiction on state highways/interstates only. Other states have "state police" that investigate all crime. Either way the average starting salary for these positions is around 35k. Most northern states are above that mark out of necessity, because of the higher cost of living/taxes. The pension helps to make up the difference in the long run, but only if you live long enough into retirement. Retired police don't live too long due to the effects of long term shift work and of course the stress, so states are making out quite well in that regard thus far. |

New York State Troopers, haha I talked to two different troopers and I have a cop for a teacher now, and they all said your first year as a trooper you get 65K and every year after that it increases by just about 5 K |

Depends if you're a Union or a right to work state. In NC first year teachers get like 27K and it increases a certain percentage based on how many years you stay there. It's the same with any state really. most of the Northern States are Part of the Union and they get paid much more. |

Highest paid != best job. If you'll notice, the highest paid job is the Anesthesiologist, but that's a 4th tier job based on other criteria. I'm guessing law enforcement didn't make the list because there's a possibility of getting shot by a drug dealer. Some people would call that a down-side. |

Well me hoping to go into law enforcement myself, I dont see that as a downside as long as I am helping someone in need. |

NYSP actually starts at over 70k now, after completion through the academy. "...helping someone in need." That might happen once every couple months. There's not a whole lot of true victims out there these days. |

Ya one thing my teacher who is a police officer said was, If you are going to be a police officer you need to like what you do, and do things for other people, and have that be your goal, cuz if you dont, you will not last in the police field. |

I've been able to make a smooth transition from wanting to help people, to realizing that most of the time there are no good people involved in my investigations, and therefore simply hating bad people and enjoying when I put them in prison. Keep your head up though, I'm sure you can do it too...lol. |

The most fulfilling job I ever had was working on the ambulance. Even though it was shift work, 60+ hours a week, lived off convenience store roller dogs and Tim Hortons, and had no social life, that one person every once in a while that was truly grateful for your help made the $7/hour worth it. Until I decided that I no longer wanted to deal with shootings and crack dealers for said $7/hour.

Deciding what agency to work for is a multi-factor decision between 1) how much action/experience you want, 2)how much pay, and 3)what type of work you like. A county sheriff's department or small town will provide a semi-limited range of experience and action with average pay. A city department (like Buffalo PD) will provide a lot of action and a great range of work experience with maybe a little more pay. NYSP will provide a limited range of work experience (mostly traffic) but better pay. NYSP would put you in many more scenarios out on the highway by yourself, but they also provide a range of career options (like criminal investigations) after some years on the road and proving yourself. Look into the specifics of each agency's retirement plan, they are not all equal. |
