This from macrumors.com:

Quote:
The Wall Street Journal over the weekend profiled iPhone usage among employees of Apple's longtime rival Microsoft, noting that approximately 10,000 Microsoft employees, representing about 10% of the company's global headcount, were accessing their work e-mail accounts via iPhone last year.

Quote:
Some Microsoft workers take pains to hide their iPhones. While rank-and-file workers tend to use the iPhone openly around peers, some conceal them within sight of more senior executives. One Microsoft worker said he knows several colleagues who try to disguise their iPhones with cases that make them look more like generic handsets.

"Maybe once a year I'm in a meeting with Steve Ballmer," said this employee. "It doesn't matter who's calling, I'm not answering my phone."

The report notes that Microsoft last year changed its corporate mobile phone reimbursement policies to cover only device running Windows Mobile, although company executives have stated that the move was a cost-cutting measure rather than an attempt to clamp down on employe usage of devices from Microsoft's competitors.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has famously objected to his employees' iPhone usage, even singling out an iPhone-toting Microsoft employee at a company meeting and playfully pretending to stomp on the device.

I think Microsoft is making a bigger deal out of this than it needs to be.

Not really...one of their corporate mottos is "Eat your own dog food".

They're pretty serious about it.

not at all.

when i worked for the pistons, the palace was a coke facility, but we still got small orders of pepsi for the celebrities who were in suites. the pepsi vendor legally could not drink coke, and vice versa for the coke vendor. if they engaged in drinking the opposing soda, their employment would be terminated.

microsoft should offer the nexus one or other windows based android phones to employees, and offer to buy out their ATT contract. refusal to do so results in unpaid suspension from microsoft. thats just good business.

That's part of the problem.
The nexus one and android run the google OS....not windows mobile.

No cool phones run windows mobile.
As a former owner of a Motorola Q I can testify to how much they suck.

Yeah, that's a pretty common mandate in technology fields.

I disagree, I just got the HTC Pure, had the android phone for about a day, and got pissed at it. Googles OS isn't user friendly, and allows for little customization.

The I-phone, to me is big and clunky.

HTC Pure, windows OS; very user friendly, easily customizable. The new windows mobile is way better than the prehistoric windows mobile imo. I've had both, and would agree with you back when I had my Pantech-Duo, but by new phone has been nothing but great.

Minus my constant butt dialing

Then you were doing something wrong.
Android is the most open platform available from a development / customization standpoint.

Haha, well if Microsoft didn't suck so much with their mobile OS's and such they wouldn't have this problem.

Thanks for that highly insightful post.

I digress - I had an iPhone for about a month, but had to switch back to my BlackBerry. The apps were 'neat'; the only one of any use for me on the iPhone, though, was LogMeIn.

Well, I can see why they would be mad... but I mean... like if its your choice of phone I dont see how they can really have a say, I mean if you wanna spend the money on a certain phone then w/e you should be able to do what you wish.

Not so much - part of being a good employee is being proud of who you work for, and supporting them in any way. How many GM employees do you see driving Ford vehicles? I work for AT&T - you're damn right I'm on their network, even though my division has NOTHING to do with cellular service. When I worked for an accounting firm, who do you think did my taxes, even though other firms were cheaper?

Like Squanto said - one of their mottos is "eat your own dog food". When you find an employer (of that magnitude especially), you need to commit yourself to them. My girlfriend just got a job at Lowes (the hardware store, not the grocery store). We don't shop at Home Depot any more.

Maybe Microsoft should make a good phone then... lets be honest, if you want a phone, you want one that you feel is best for you... why would you buy a crap phone from your company if it isnt going to work...? I Mean I can understand what you all are saying but still.

WINNER! So Why are they bitching about it? If Microsoft doesn't want their employees using Iphones then they should make their own type of phone and sell it to Verizon or something along those lines...

For a minute I thought Motorola was a part of Microsoft... I have no clue why... haha

but, microsoft has a windows OS for mobile phones.

googles phone is actually made by HTC, but branded by google. microsoft, im almost sure of it, has to be getting into the cell phone business outside an OS.

Exactly. One of my good friends works for Microsoft out in Seattle. He graduated from Northeastern U, anyways, he uses the IPhone. He started working there last July and they noticed he had the IPhone and actually called him into the office. My buddy was honest with them, told them it's the better phone, and told them exactly why. They loved his honesty and actually he received some type of award few months later for being the best newcomer or whatever and they said it was mainly due to that talk.

Maybe true, but the BlackBerry Enterprise Server makes me want to punch kittens and babies.
