Has anyone tried this ? I saw on the travel channel that it was banned in the US until 2007 or something....supposedly it has hallucinogenic properties ? What does it taste like ? any truth to this ? |

OK, here goes... Any absinthe sold within the United States is a neutered version that contains either no wormwood or an insubstantial amount. The amount of wormwood in absinthe is what determines how much thujone, the active ingredient in providing any sort of high, is in it. This in turn is what's at the center of the legal battle over true absinthe, because with the thujone absinthe is kind of a hallucinogenic drug. The absinthe in stores now is basically an anise-flavored vodka of a high proof. HOWEVER, if you want to make your own authentic absinthe, either procure a bottle of ridiculously high proof vodka or everclear and use an herbal kit from Green Devil. My buddy brews real absinthe using kits from Green Devil and, when brewed just right, tastes great and does get you pretty fucked up. It doesn't really make you hallucinate, but it does fuck shit up pretty good. |

Never tried it, but they do sell it here in town. My brother and best bud tried it one night... Apparently they became so stupid they started their own," Jackass" show and filmed it on his cam corder. Staples in the face, staples in the chest, and a lot of other absolutely fucked up things. Best part is, they don't remember doing it. If what they say is true, then this shit is leathal! |

I made some in college when it was still illegal. The stuff you get in stores in the US has something like 1/10 the strength of the hallucinogen of unadulterated European versions. Yes, it'll get you high and drunk. It's very bitter and is commonly served by pouring it through a slotted spoon full of sugar to combat the bitterness. I'm sure you can find US strength versions in any well stocked liquor store...at least I can here in California. Hell, I've got a bottle on my liquor shelf right now. |

Yeah...that's what I did in college. The kicker is you could always get the ingredients legally. Wormwood or mugwart can be found in natural foods stores, health stores or an apothecary. The "real" stuff is a much more complicated brewing process than just steeping mugwart in alcohol. |

Yea, that's the funny thing - absinthe itself is illegal, but nothing is stopping you from buying the necessary ingredients. |

ive had it and i love it. but its not for the weak of heart. my friend has a bottle and him, me and my other friend all did a shot of it. one friend fell on the ground coughing from the burn, another starting laughing at the coughing one then began to cough himself. i coughed a little but was more or less fine. the best way to describe it is that it tastes like burning (crown 2.0) and makes breathing burn (goldschlager 6.0) for a little while and it smells like rubbing alcohol. the hallucinogenic properties come from the way it was originally produced/served. The french way of serving it is to pour water water over an Absinthe spoon with a sugar cube on it to lessen the burning of the drink. well back in the 1800s they would add an opium leaf to the spoon with the sugar. so, as you can probably guess, they were getting a healthy dose of opium with their drink every time. obviously the opium practice has gone by the wayside so there is no hallucination. this is what made Van Gogh cut off his ear, supposedly. |

Yea, my first shot was pretty much the same as that one, Woz. One of my buddies doubled over from coughing and then we all started coughing after laughing at the first one. Then we did another shot haha |

You have to chug a whole bottle of it in order to get the full effect. |

Find some super strength vodka or everclear and steep the wormwood for 6 weeks or so. Here's a more involved how-to article on wikihow http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Absinthe |

Here's a more involved how-to article on wikihow http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Absinthe thanks i bookmarked that page for future reference...i may try making some of this stuff when i move into my new house...but one thing here caught my attention...think i should be worried about it ? Absinthe that contains high levels of thujone may be harmful. Thujone is toxic, especially when high concentrations are consumed. Thujone is a convulsant and binds to gamma-aminobutyric acid A (GABAA) receptors in the central nervous system. The level of thujone in European absinthe is regulated, and such set levels are not thought to be harmful. Absinthe is not an illegal drug, although thujone is regulated due to its potential toxicity. It is not recommended that one drink more than three or four servings of absinthe in one sitting. The acute intake of absinthe is not thought to be harmful, but chronic, long-term consumption may cause harm. |

I wouldn't worry about it...most recreational chemicals could probably be attached to similar disclaimers. |
