Yeah I've been following this for a few weeks...Mexican gangs roll a bit differently than American gangs.
Beheading cops is normal practice down there.

That area has a large population of...um...underprivileged people of Hispanic descent with a questionable immigration status.

That is scary. Hopefully they'll get these guys who are doing this and no officers get hurt.

Psst - Phil: It's "Hemet", not "Helmet", CA. ;)

I'll tell you what, an insurgency in the US would fucking cripple this country. Absolutely cripple it. Those of questionable immigration status? Papers or GTFO. That's it.

...well not Riverside county anyway...I wouldn't recommend that place for much of anything unless you're a big fan of the desert.

I have always tried to keep work related comments to a minimum of detail when I post here for reasons similar to what is in that story. My unit was advised of this situation weeks ago because we're also gang enforcement, and because my area is one of many Mexican/latino relocation spots. This story is only a slight exaggeration of what gang officers face on a routine basis. We do surveillance on them, they do counter-surveillance on us, we return the favor, etc...

Public support is a huge issue for gang units. The pc crowd, and those with trumped up civil rights agendas are a challenge when convincing our superiors (those who approve funding for equipment, manpower, etc) to support us and our goal. If public opinion sways too far against us it will prevent funding due to political fallout. Luckily the gangs that are going to go to the extent of murdering us are Mexican/latino gangs that have very little support in the pc/civil rights agenda crowd. In Riverside County, funding was cut to them and they have lost a large percentage of their force over the last year. This puts the officers left at a disadvantage and clearly the gang knows this and is trying to exploit it.

Rutledge, FWIW there will be a gang influence and the resulting Mexican drug traffic no matter where you choose to work. It's very much like an insurgency, but for now most people and politicians want to keep their heads in the sand and ignore it for a variety of reasons (political, agenda driven, personal corruption, etc). Think for a long time about what type of enforcement work you want to do. Talk with as many current law enforcement in varying agencies as possible. It's not all the same, so take your time and choose wisely.

Well SFS1980, my uncle was a deputy sherrif on the Island, just retired recently. He was K-9, the stories he would tell me were off the wall.
As for me, I mean, we all did a little partying as kids, or most of us anyways, the dangers from when I grew up back in the 70's and 80's is tame compared with what you Officers have to put up with today. You have my support, just let me know where I can drop the courtesy call ;)

I was hoping you'd chime in on this, 1980, given our slight knowledge of your field of work.

I was, and still am, completely fucking shocked by this level of warfare. I knew gangs would get a little batshit insane and randomly kill a cop here or there, but to be organizing strikes and homebase siege tactics like this opens my eyes up a lot wider than I thought possible.

We've had an entire gang try to enter a restricted area of the county magistrate's office, bottom floor of the county jail. One was showing up to post bond for the asshole that was just arrested, and he brought the rest of them and tried to circle the arresting officers. The gang knew that, by directive, officers had to secure their duty weapons before entering the magistrate's office - it's supposed to be a completely firearm free area due to the amount of arrestees present. Additional officers were called by radio and the situation was handled to the gang's disappointement (all arrested right there at the booking room, very convenient).

Point being they are, especially latino gangs, very bold and confrontational. Google stories anywhere around the country reference Sur-13, MS-13, Mexican Mafia (which controls both), Latin Kings, Los Primos...the list goes on. They act as the manufacturer and supplier of drugs, and black gangs act as the retailer. As gang units move up the chain of supply with better tactics and so on, it starts to hit home a little too close for the DTOs in Mexico and they start to give hit orders to their LTs in the US, targeting local and federal officers wherever they are making the best progress or are the most vulnerable. Crazy stuff at times, but gang officers start to rely on basics very heavily and work as a team in response to stay as safe as possible.

Are you sure law enforcement is the right field of work for you? I don't know that you can go through an entire career without ever having to draw down on someone, and be ready to apply slow steady pressure until the hammer drops and you take somebody's life.

Sorry..."DTOs" - drug trafficking organizations.

The hard reality is that before people or politicians are galvanized to the point of seriously addressing the issue, it will take a carefully planned and successful assasination plot of an officer. The hot topic of illegal immigration is directly tied to the issue though, so you will see Mexican resistance due to the cash flow the drug trade sends back south of the border, as well as the pro-(illegal) immigration stance already taken by many politicians. It's an uphill battle without a doubt.
