Pope Benedict XVI was drawn deeper yesterday into the clerical sex abuse scandal that has begun to overwhelm the Roman Catholic Church, when he was accused of personally failing to take action against a serial paedophile.

This news is actually a few weeks days old, but whenever it is brought up it still sends me into fits.

When are pedophile priests finally going to get treated the same way as child molesters who aren't men of the cloth?

I just don't get how the Catholic church can condemn homosexuality, but when a member of the clergy engages in not just homosexual, but pederastic activity, it's swept under the carpet.

The way the Catholic church handles these reasons is a big factor in my non-religiousness.

If the creepy guy who lives down the street diddles a young child, they're chastised by the community, prosecuted, and forced to register as a sex offender so that they are forced to live with what they had done for the rest of their lives.

If a man of the cloth diddles a young child, usually one that looks up and respects the man, they're 'reassigned', and nobody knows about it for years afterward, if at all.

I'm not one to criticize the way the church wants to do its business. However, when a church member breaks the law, they need to live with the consequences just like anyone else does.

I heard about this a weeks or so ago. The priest wrote a letter to the now pope stating that he had repented and would very much like to keep his priesthood. This makes me nauseous. A 'man of God' can get away with something this disturbing but a normal man can't even sneeze at a little girl/boy without being called a pedophile.

It's disgusting that religious figures have protection like this and just strengthens my resolve about it. Wanna prove me wrong Catholics? Then join together and get this taken care of because you of all people should be wanting justice. Aside from the obvious moral issues and hypocrisy these guys are making your entire faith look like a disgusting, good old boy club run by that creepy old man from Family Guy. I wouldn't join the YMCA if this stuff was happening there so why would I join the Church? The Church does a lot of good despite my personal feelings about religion so get your stuff together and kick these sickos out.

Well if there is a Hell, we all know that all those priests who have molested children are rotting in it right now, or will be as soon as their sad, pathetic soul leaves this Earth. So, whatever.

Uh, no it's not.

Edit: This topic can and most likely will get ugly, but I don't care

its fucked up, for sure. but if he repented, then you are absolved by catholic theory, i think. the religion is founded on forgiveness.

so im on the fence about this. on one hand, yes, its VERY fucked up. on the other, by Christianity, he is forgiven. the grey area, as horrific as it is, is massive.

my opinion, the church should forgive him, however, his duties are waived.

the judicial system, on the other hand, well, thats up to them to decide.

There is no grey area in this, or rather there ought not to be. He molested hundreds of children. He committed a crime. He should be tried and sent to prison. End of story, no arguing, no debating, no nothing.

In prison, where child molesters are killed.

Edit: Well, I don't know that for a fact, but it's always been talked about that child molesters/child killers get done to them what they perpetrated upon their defenseless victims. So, I guess he'd get raped viciously and then possibly killed. I should ask my uncle what happens with molesters in prison...he's a prison guard.

Well look at it this way.. i think you're giving the priests far to much credit. If you were a creep wouldn't you want a safety net? Like say a cross and whole region backing you that what you did didn't happen. These "men of the cloth" are not... I bet alot of them dont give 2 shits about what the preach the gospel, just as long as they go through the motions so they can get their sick fix. Then just because they say a few chants POOF instant forgiveness.. If you were pedophile why wouldn't you jump at the chance to become a priest, its easy access. Just my thought.

Sickening though.

We can hope.

And speaking of sex, that artery in the Hugh Downs Reports at the bottom of the page sure looks like a limp dick when you just catch sight of it out of the corner of your eye.

Let's take out the superstition and dogma for a second. This is a crime in every forward thinking nation and should result in seeing these sick bastards held responsible. These are children we are talking about. If it was just dude on dude "of the cloth" love then let the ghost in the sky deal with it. If it's a kid getting molested you don't get the luxury of your religion, you get convicted.
