| Post subject: | The Game Day Thread Thread |
So I wanted to start a topic on game day threads. GDTs are extremely popular to many of you. I see the large numbers of people signed in most every game. But I myself rarely participate in them. My purpose here is to ask you guys how you do it. I've tried to post in GDTs here and there, but I've found it very hard to even keep up with the threads (they move so fast), much less participate in the GDT and pay attention to the game. Doesn't it take away from your focus, and thus your enjoyment of the game? Now I'm no stranger to multi-tasking. I do it often, and often am on the computer playing poker while watching a hockey game. But I'll be the first to admit that my attention gets divided and I often miss parts of the game that I have to rewind and watch again (I'm a DVR junkie). My theory on multi-tasking is that while it is possible to do more than one thing at once, when you do multi-task, you're really only able to pay attention to one thing at a time, and are doing the other without thinking about it. For example, as a musician, I often play my bass and sing at the same time. But really, I am only thinking about one or the other while I do this, and I am doing the other from rote muscle memory. So I'm say, thinking about singing, but just automatically playing guitar. Well, isn't that what happens to you all posting in GDTs while watching the game? How can you type your comments without taking your attention away from the game? I understand that paying close attention to every second of 82 games isn't too realistic. But for important games like the playoffs, or the Olympic gold medal game, do you really think you're doing justice to the game if you're constantly typing and hitting refresh? This is something I've wondered about for a while. What are your thoughts frequent GDT posters? |

I'm a DVR guy like you (yay Pacific time zone)...but I'm with you...I rarely participate in them and when I do it's during intermission or after a goal is scored. I'm too busy yelling at the TV and frightening all the small animals in my house to type on a message board...especially during the playoffs. |

I go in runs. Those boring Tuesday night games in January, I'll tend to post more. In the playoffs, fuggetaboutit. |

Yeah, sometimes it is a distraction. If it's an important game or if it's just really intense, I don't post as much. I'll usually post my thoughts during commercial breaks or intermissions. If it's a game where the Sabres are up by a lot OR they're playing like complete shit, I'll rant and rave more in the GDT. |

When I had no video and only sound I would post in them so much. Now I'm normally bickering on Justin.tv's chat with other fans instead of in our GDT's or pop in whenever we score or something stupid happened. |

Yes, I have found that going in the message boards can distract you from the game...but i am like squanto...i stay glued to the game in the playoffs.... I also have been going to jtv lately to watch games and i will chat there....regular season i would chat during the game, but now i wait till a whistle...it's the playoffs I don't want to miss anything.... but also in the past i have really enjoyed a gdt...if you are alone watching the game it's good to go there to chat with everyone and have some drinks too |

I bet Crosscheck knows the answer to what's the question. But you just moved closer to me on my personal scale of nerdness ATL. |

I type and watch also. Same room, being a touch typist helps. I get familiar with a keyboard, and I can type a few hundred words without looking and averaging about a dozen typos. That's how I've gotten so good with GDT posting. |

Impressive. I'm not a classically trained typer. I do my own version of hunt-and-peck, but I can get probably at least 50 words per minute if I try. |

I'm not trained at all, either - it all comes from my familiarity with my keyboard that im using. I wish I had a webcam to show you all that I'm typing this without looking at alla (my eyes are on the flame on the tb) but i dont so I cant Edit: Yea, I made a bunch in that post - whatever, I've been drinking and am trying to watch the Bandits game and the Sens/Pens game lol

But that still doesn't explain how you can read the other posts. |
