According to a new poll the plurality of Americans now believe that the U.S. makes better-quality vehicles than Asia.

I love the vote of confidence for U.S. car companies, but we are truly a deeply delusional people. We think we have the best health care system in the world, as well, so there you go.

FWIW, I drive a 1990 Nissan 240sx. I've had two issues since I bought it. At 115,000, I had to replace the alternator (which is NOT hard to do yourself, so I did it), and at 130,000 (just a few weeks ago) I had to replace the distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs, wires, ignition coil, and coolant temperature sensor. Total for parts: $170. Total time for labor: 2hrs. Mechanic's estimate: $700.00.

That's something you just can't do with new cars. What I just explained is pretty much the standard for my car - 20 years in and running strong. There are many people with 200k+ miles, still happily driving.

Before those things crapped out on me, I was getting about 24mpg. Last tank, I averaged 28mpg, and I might be over that on this tank.

American automakers have stepped up big time, and have had to in order to stay in business. The quality of American cars now compared to before has vastly improved. Would I say that it's better than the average Asian car, in some cases yes, but as a whole I don't think US automakers are there yet.

Just because it's from Asia doesn't mean that the thing won't ever break down either. I still believe that Honda and Toyota have some of the best quality, even in light of this whole unintended acceleration BS. I don't believe Nissan is on par with Toyota or Honda quality, but because it is Asian it does get thrown into the "It's Japanese it must be reliable" stereotype. Hyundai used to make awful cars, but have really stepped up their game and improved quality. Suabaru I've seen a decline in quality recently, their cars used to be bulletproof. After driving some of their newer models the build quality has fallen compared to their older models. Mitsubishi quality has been terrible for the past few years, just take a drive in the Galant then drive a Fusion, Camry, Accord, Mazda 6, Sonata, etc.

American car companies have stepped up their game because they've had to in order to remain in business. Americans got tired of shit quality. My family has owned quite a few domestic cars from the "old" GM, Ford, and Chrylser, and I can tell you that the quality now far exceedes what they were putting out then. Even Chrylser (yes I said it) is going to improve, but will take much longer than Ford or GM has. I do think that both Ford and GM are putting out cars that can compete with the likes of Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, etc.

I wouldn't say the US is delusional in thinking that our quality is better. Take into account that the poll was taken in the midst of the Unintended Acceleration crap, and the fact that GM and Ford were on the upswing with introducing new cars.

It can be hard to say who is better when taking into account all of the companies in both the US and Asia. Both have their high points ( Toyota, Honda; Ford and GM are better) and their low points ( Mitsubishi, Suzuki; Chrysler).

Subaru drivers are so awful. I can't count the number of times I've been driving in the winter with minimal snowfall, and clear roads only to see a Subaru driver going 40 on the highway.

I completely agree. Even now that the weather is nice they drive in the left lane at or below the speed limit. They're almost always so self-righteous too. They're probably at the top of my list for most hated drivers. Even Priuses drive faster sometimes.

I was talking to my dad about this the other day... In recent years he's driven an acura mdx, z06 vette, jag xjr, tahoe, and most recently a ford Taurus SHO.

He says the ford is probably his favourite car that he's ever owned, tonnes of balls under the hood, the sync' audio system is sweet, and the overall interior has so many extra little features its a pleasure to drive

I'll stick to my saab :)

Wow, thanks a lot! That was one of the first articles that I wrote. It got me on a morning show in Rochester called The Break Room on 96.5 WCMF. I haven't written for Konkocars in quite some time since I've been busy with http://www.MotoringExposure.com. I do plan on writing The Top 10 Dip Cars (Dips = Female douchebags) in the near future. I'll send you a link when I'm done with it.

Thats pretty awesome that your Dad owns one of the new SHOs. Just out of curiosity, what kind of mpg's has he been getting? I've read that a lot of car mags aren't getting the same mpg that Ford has advertised, but it could be from not being broken in yet. Also, does he call it S-H-O or SHO (like show)? I know Ford calls it the SHO now instead of the S-H-O.

I also think American cars have improved dramatically. I drive an American car, my wife drives an American car, my son drives an American car, and the cars we owned just before these were American cars. I am also trying to talk my wife into letting me take the money I made from investing in gold and buying Ford stock.

However, American cars have not yet reached the point where they match the quality of the Japanese across the board, especially Toyota, which, in spite of its recent public relations problems, still makes some of the most reliable and dependable cars on the market.

I don't know much about cars, but I've had a Mazda 626 with 120,000 miles for about 4 months now and not a single problem.

I love it. Spacious, comfortable ride, and surprisingly decent on gas.

These are what we drove in Afghanistan - definitely tough as nails. We rolled a few. Sometimes, we got lucky and they landed back on their feet. Otherwise, we rolled over, and we kept a jack in the back to bend 'em back into usable shape.

I'd buy most German cars over Asian cars, but I'd buy most Japanese cars over French or Italian cars (except italian sport cars) and I'd never buy a car from China or India. I can't say much about American cars except Ford, they have some decent cars.

My favourite cars are actually from England (Aston Martins)

Nice Top 10 douche bag list.

Even though a 350Z, G35, and the IS wouldn't be on my list, but I actually would know how to tune those cars properly.

I still want a 240sx though.

American cars have become much more reliable, but they still don't beat out some of the same Asian cars out there.

This isn't the 70's when the Big Three were the only things on the road.
