nice price...I think my next system build is going to be a hackintosh though.
I would have been nice if M$ had an upgrade path from XP, I'm sure that's hurting adoption (I know I would have upgraded my windows desktop by now if there were).

I had to take tests on Windows 7. You can update from XP.

You can overwrite your windows directory but you still have to manually re-install all your programs...that's the deal breaker for me.

/and that's not really an upgrade path

Vista wasn't awful, if you had the hardware to support it, and if you weren't in a corporate environment, and if you only wanted to complete simple tasks, and if you believed that a pretty user interface was more important than anything else....

;)

Buy a Mac, then do what Apple tells you to.

7 is a lot faster. Vista should never have been.

I still use XP, mostly out of familiarity, but also have 7 installed and it is quite impressive.

If you're using Vista, switch to Classic Theme or disable Aero and all that stuff, makes it run a lot faster.

I have a slightly older machine that runs Win7 just fine, but the fact that I have 4GB of RAM in there probably helps.

I also have a MacBook, iMac, and Debian linux machine running at home too.

Yeah, I'm a dork.

I like Vista too. I've never had a real issue with it. People always complain to me about how much vista sucks, but I'm not really sure what they're referring to exactly in the sucking department. Maybe I just don't use my computer for the things that vista sucks at.

Word

My 67 yr. old Dad has an Ubuntu machine and my daughter's machine runs Edubuntu.

I unfortunately equate linux to work though...I admin CentOS and Debian all day long.
I think that's why I prefer the happy medium OS X provides.

A slick GUI to go easy on the eyes and I can whip out tcpdump, lsof or strace when necessary.

If I could finally get Flash to work properly with Ubuntu, I'd fall madly in love. (And yes, X and SATW, I've done everything to try and make all .swf work. It just doesn't behave)

Don't worry...the way Steve Jobs is swinging his dick around in regards to Adobe, I'm guessing flash will be close to irrelevant in a couple years.
It's all about html5 now.

Not gonna disagree Phil. I think it's more adobe's fault for lacking the energy to make it work.

10.04 has done some really great things tho. If you haven't checked it out yet, please do. I do bug triage for Empathy (the IM client) as well as write patches for it. I'm an Ubuntu member, and promote it through my LoCo (DC Loco). So Ubuntu has become my life, if you can't tell.

Nobody has held Adobe to task on flash to force them to improve their product. It's become bloated, fat, full of security holes, and the destroyer of computer performance. Nobody could really complain because flash was well adopted, and there weren't many other options for video delivery.

Now, people are calling them out on it. Adobe will have to make their product not suck, or people are just going to say fuck you and move elsewhere. Apple just happens to be the spearhead of that movement, and people are hating on them because they like to hate Apple.

I'm not hating on Apple, but I do think the feud is a bit silly in perspective. Fun to watch though.
Flash was never designed for mobile devices (which is the crux of the beef IMO. Steve Jobs doesn't want to have bad battery life stats.) and the big players (youtube etc.) already offer, or are currently encoding in other formats.
