I'm sure we've heard about that 17 year old that got tasered or whatever for running out into the field...

Deserved? I feel a good ol' fashion tackle would've worked, I acutally think when fans run out there that its funny.

...And we've seen the Rob Ray video of him beating up a Nordiques fan

So has it ever CROSSED your minds to do it? No matter what level it is? High School, College, Pro?

The only time I thought about it was running out during the annual Cortaca Jug football game between my alma mater, Cortland State and Ithaca College. Obviously I was wasted but knew I was a poor college student and didn't feel like paying the fines that would go with it.

Did the kid deserve to get

I think when you do something like that you must assume any number of consequences will result. A tasing is within that realm of possibilities.
I was actually surprised the taser was able to hit him at full stride with the cop running.

If it's funny when a fan runs out there, it's double funny when it ends like that.

The tasing reflects poorly on stadium security being too lazy to run down one kid with a 6 to 1 numbers advantage.

On the other hand you never know if that fan could be carrying a weapon and have ill intentions.

And then after he got tasered he was all ...boooosh :(

I dunno, yea you should expect a taser is within the realm of possibility, but what happened to corralling the guy toward a gate after he got gassed?

I'm thinking if that lard ass cop tackled him, he would have sustained greater injuries...if the cop could actually catch him that is...

I wrote about this on my blog.

I think that the use of the taser is out of line. Do what every other stadium does, and let the guy gas himself out and corral him when he gets tired.

I don't have a problem with it if the kid if getting close to the players, or is doing something suspicious enough that a quick takedown is warranted. But a 17 year kid waving a towel in center field doesn't deserve the taser after 20 seconds on the field.

Meh...it may have been out of line, but the cop didn't put the kid on the field.
That was a conscious decision and a taser was a possible outcome.
Poor decisions all around. Everyone, enjoy your dose of fail.

I guess for me it's just the annoyance that cops tend to use the taser more and more frequently, with less and less reason for it.

Electrocuting someone posing no direct physical threat to the officer or any other person is a bit over the top IMO.

I would agree with that in general.
Are there any stats that show since the wide spread adoption of less-than-lethal weapons that cop caused death and injury have been reduced?

Cops don't use them more and more frequently, tasers have been purchased and supplied to cops more and more. More tasers mean more uses, because there are so many idiots out there. All we ever hear about are the high profile taser incidents. The mundane success stories, and the countless times they aren't used when they could be, never make the news.

These aren't the best of times to assume a person running out on the playing surface is just goofing off. I can also say with certainty that the risk of injury while tackling people running is much greater than tasing them. I hope people noticed that the kid was up and walking, totally capable, as soon as they got done cuffing him and let him up.

If I had a choice I would prefer to tackle a kid like that, but I can run like crazy and I'm confidant when putting hands on suspects. I don't blame any officer in that scenario for using the taser though, because there is a risk that it's more than just a joy run through the field. I certainly don't give a shit what the kid thinks about it.

SF1980 : That's a fair point. Although, most of the time, those folks aren't tackled. They run around and get herded, then they tend to fall on the ground one they get grabbed.

However, wouldn't you think that going to the taser first would generally be a bad idea? I read some recommendations and studies that said the guidelines for use of the taser should be one step below the guidelines for using a firearm. Obviously, only studies and such, not actual law enforcement rules, but they made valid points.

I'm all for someone getting tasered when it was deserving. I don't want to say I know what it's like to be a cop, but I worked right along side them for years on the streets, so I think I have a good idea of what situations would call for it, and what would not.

I just think in this situation, the taser was a bit much, although I will freely admit I have the benefit of hindsight.

I mean, if a fan is attacking a player then he should get tased for sure. Like that father and son that attacked the Royals first base coach.

i just think if someone is going to break the law, they should be prepared to accept every and all consequence. even if the apprehension sucks major dick, well, sorry about your bad luck.

Using that logic, the cop should have pulled his 9mm and "busted a cap in that fool's ass".

Egh not really. I mean the kid knows he is going to be apprehended at some point, so he knows he's either going to get tackled, clocked, tased or all three. I think Irony implied that the consequences be reasonable to the law being broken.

Like if you rob a bank, you should expect to get shot. If you assault someone, you should expect to get clocked, tased, maced, whatever.

And if you run around on the field, you should get tackled. Not fucking tasered. What if that kid had a heart condition?

Some situations dictate the use of less-than-lethal force. This one? Not in my book. Pepper spray, maybe. Or the fatass cop could lose about 20 pounds, and slide tackle the fucker.
