I'm an avid camper / backpacker...

Those 1 person bivy tents have been around for a long time (likewise with the throw and pop-up style)...I have one. The point of it turning into a jacket I don't get. It probably makes a crappy tent and a crappy jacket.

That mountain hardware tent is hardcore (that's why it's $3000).

That solar tent is full of FAIL on many levels a couple of which are:
1. solar panels are friggin heavy so it wouldn't be good for backpacking.
2. if you need electricity on a camping trip you're doing it wrong and need to GTFO.

Yeah, the best part of camping is leaving my cell phone in the car. :)

Best part about camping is not spending it in a cabin or RV :D

okay, so i do this pretty seriously and for a living.

mountain hardwear is the best of the best. if hockey was the outdoor recreation market, mountain hardwear would be gordie howe, wayne gretzky, patrick roy, and scott stevens combined.

i own some MH gear, but it's a little out of my price range for tents- though my 45 degree bag is a down MH.

The hammock bivvys are what i use in the summer. those tents are generally pretty lame though. also, any piece of real gear that 'converts' or something is useless. it's like ronco.

my boss owns the nemo, it's pretty bitchin- i stole it for an overnight and loved it.

that kayak tent is super unsafe because of the brace you have to have on the boat. it makes it really hard to perform some critical safety strokes (when necessary) on flat water. it's probably okay for some things- but if you have a kayak, you have a place to carry a small tent, so a little useless.

pop up tents suck.

the treepee would be mega unstable and you'd swing and roll- and it loks like there's only one support rope, so you'd have to stay exactly in the middle or you'd roll to the corner.

all in all an interesting list. weird for me to see some of the yuppie comfort camping gear.

Laaame. That's one of the reasons I want to start getting into camping. Course, I need the girlfriend first...

I'll say it again...if you have an electrical outlet in your tent you're definitely doing it wrong.
Seriously, stay home and leave that camping spot for someone with an interest in camping.

*sigh*
Yeah I hear ya.
I guess I have a hard time with it because I was big into solo backpacking, but now that I have a family I've had to get a set of car camping gear and the crap available is stunning. I think Coleman has a line of tents with integrated batteries / outlets too.

coleman is the ultimate car camper/yuppie camper's dream.

car camping isn't bad if it's camping...with your car there. i think you probably know what i mean. basically, you drive in and make a base camp and have a propane stove and maybe a cooler with some basics in it, like hot dogs and hamburgers...etc.

it's when you use the radio, headlights, and other "home" comforts that it gets ruined.

that being said, i'm a backpacking camper. i love putting together my 65lb pack and just hitting the woods for 4-5 days at a time. give me rice, carrots, tuna wraps, and apple empanadas...OR GIVE ME DEATH

what about me, pat? when i was a kid, our house was broken into, and since then ive always slept with the lights on, or some sort of light lighting up my room (my lava lamp does good, with my shades open) and also, a fan. cause i need white noise to sleep. outside that, i dont use anything when i camp.

Light and sound need not come from electricity.

there are dozens of battery powered low light systems and solar charged light systems. and by systems, i mean like passive light, like a dull night lite or something. you should learn to live without a fan. there's plenty of noise in nature at night anyways.

Yeah, I always use a fan, but I live in the country so it's deathly quiet if I don't. If I'm somewhere more populated I don't use one.

yeah, like mothman and sasquatch :(

last night in my subdivision, wind was making the trees creak. my genuine hatred and fear of the dark sent me inside with my tail between my legs. i hate the dark.

An old Coleman kerosene lamp puts off tons of light and sounds like a jet taking off...you should get one ;)
