Both my first and last name are awful when dealing with new people.

That said, if I have a son someday I want to name him Shane, and I briefly considered having it spelled Sean at it should be, before realizing that that would just be perpetuating the name cruelty bestowed upon me by my parents for another generation, and how dare I do that lol.

I'm so used to that it doesn't even bother me, so go ahead. Haha.

It's better than being called Joel...

People always pronounce my name as "Carolyn"...I guess I've gotten used to it, but it annoys me when I correct them and they keep pronouncing it like that, as if it's a preference. Caroline and Carolyn are two different names, everyone!

No one can ever figure my first name out. It's either spelled wrong, pronounced wrong or accompanied by a chorus of 'come on Eileen'. And my last name elicits giggles and a lot of 'REALLY?'. Thanks a lot, Mom and Dad.

It's Jay-el. How Phil says it. When people see it written irl but don't know how to pronounce it, I always tell them to imagine that it's the letters JL together. I am also asked almost every time I meet someone new what my name stands for because the other person thinks my initials are JL and that that's what I go by.

I see where Caro is coming from on this. My cousin Lauren (pronounced like Loren, as in Sophia Loren) has been called Lauren (pronounced like Lauren Bacall) all her life and it still drives her nuts.
