There was a beer thread going but it up and disappeared faster then a Kovalchuk contract. So here's my unofficial, official beer thread.

Let me get this mother started by telling you all (yinz) about Drop Top Amber Ale by Widmer Brothers.

It's great. It's really great!

$32 bucks/case here at my local beer distributer (a new place with an absolutely awesome selection!), and it's good. Most micro-brews don't give me a hangover, and I suspect it's because they don't load their beers up with crap, just quality. This one is no exception.

But what I really want to talk about, is the taste. In my own words it's not quit fruity, not quit hoppy, definitely not bitter, very smooth, and for lack of a better word, distinctive. After every sip you look forward to the next one! :)

Quote:
A rich, flavorful Amber that's smooth and easy to drink. Drop Top is fermented by an American Ale yeast to produce beer with a clean flavor and fruity aroma. The velvet texture is from using Honey malt and a touch of milk sugar. The Alchemy bittering hops provide soft bitterness. Simcoe, a newly developed hop variety, adds unique hop flavor and aroma.

I have a Rye IPA in one of my fermentors right now...I love the spiciness rye provides, it goes so well with hops.

oh HELLS yeah, that stuff is great.

I'll also put a shout out for:

Sierra Nevada - Pale ale
Sierra Nevada - Torpedo
Dogfish head - 60 min IPA
Dogfish head - 90 min IPA(hold onto your fucking hat)
Sam Adams - Black lager (A lot of S.A's stuff disappoints me, but the black lager was special)
North Coast Brewing - Old Rasputin russian imperial stout (dont bother holding on, your hat is gone, this shit is so smooth and high gravity it always manages to sneak up on me.)

I like hoppy beers, so I'll probably give that Terrapin Rye Pale Ale a try. I gotta try some of that dogfish stuff, also. I just checked out their site and they make booze, too!

For you Sierra Nevada fans, I got a 750ml corked and wired bottle of that 30 year aniversary brew. It was $10, but it was worth it. I've had bold beers before that tried to have big hops and do the rich malty thing all together, and failed. But not this one. For lack of a better description, there was really a lot going on with that beer and it was really good.

The 2 guys that founded Sierra Nevada came from my homebrew club :)

I have bottles of BigFoot going back 6 years.

Dude, Jimi Hendrix used to babysit me.

I swear I just posted this thread, but it's gone. I was saying good call on the Drop Top to X-pens Fan. It's probably Widmer's best brew IMO, and Widmer are one of the major micro-breweries in Portland.

The Widmere brothers are starting to get a little big for their britches if you ask me.

http://brookstonbeerbulletin.com/widmer ... a-brewing/
Quote:
The Oregonian is reporting that the Craft Brewers Alliance (essentially Widmer, with RedHook and distribution of Goose Island and Kona) will purchase Kona Brewing for $13.9 million. Under the terms of the agreement, Kona will become a “wholly owned subsidiary” and Mattson Davis will remain at the helm, with brewing for the mainland continuing to be done at Widmer and RedHook breweries.

I get in a beer nerd impotent rage at widmere because they call their American wheat style beer a "heffeweizen" (so does Pyramid) so when a less knowledgeable consumer actually tries a heffeweizen, they compare it to those versions and assume something is wrong with the real thing.

/hint: heffeweizen tastes like bananas and cloves...not budweiser.

I bought a case of Merry Monk. BIG mistake. It's too rich, and too strong. I put the rest in my basement, I'll try to pass it off on guests someday! lol
