Maybe some of you have seen this already but I just saw it and though it was pretty cool. Adolek Kohn, a 89-year-old survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp is in a new video dancing with his daughter and 3 grandchildren at the camp to the tune of "I will Survive". I think is pretty damn awesome and life affirming thing to do but apparently it's sparked a debate given the gravity of the location and the solemnity it demands. It's all fine and good for the survivor himself, but try to put yourself into someone else's position. let's say both your parents, your aunts and uncles were gased at Auschwitz. Now along comes this guy releasing a music video dancing to "I will Survive" at the camp. Might that not seem a little heartless to you? |

I support anyone who survived that place to do whatever they want. Nobody who wasnt there has any right to say shit. (On the other side, I wish that place was razed to the ground. I know that there's something to be said about reminding people of what happened there so it's never forgotten, but it just sickens me in a way that a place where so many people were brutally murdered is effectively a tourist attraction.) |

I don't know, I think memorializing something like that is a good thing, if nothing more than to keep the human race accountable a provide a constant reminder of evils that should never happen again. |

Gettysburg, Omaha beach, pearl harbor etc. I think the lessons history has to teach us are much more powerful when the places can be experienced rather then just read about. |

I agree about experiencing and remembering places. But let's use Omaha Beach as a parallel example. You're from a military family Cross. Don't you think there might be some relatives that would think it's in bad taste if somebody made a video of themselves dancing on Omaha Beach to say, "Blitzkrieg Bop"? |

eeeghhhh....maybe. I see this a bit differently though. Maybe there's not a good analogy for this situation since battlegrounds, while being places of immense death and suffering are also places where both sides paid a price. Making it out of a one sided death factory and thumbing your nose at your would be killers is different than celebrating the outcome of a battle. |

absolutely he can do that. hes not some jabroni off the street, he is a survivor. and he has every right to celebrate his survival in a place where all remaining prisoners were ordered to be executed when the nazis realized the soviets were approaching. its damn spectacular he survived. |
