Yeah, so if you jailbreak your iphone, they want to be able to kill it. Fuck them. You pay for the device? You can do what you want with it.

It'd be like if Nissan decided to not allow a pathfinder's turbo on my 240.

Motorola already did this, minus the patent part. They had a mechanism in place to brick any Droid phone that was running an unreleased or modded version of Android. The only way to unbrick was to send to Moto.

It's a patent application that will never get approved because it's provable that someone else already did it.

Good thing this isn't in cars, because I don't want my motor in my 240 either and it will be replaced.

I agree with you NYI, who cares what you do to the phone if you bought it. Apple already has your money regardless.

they can do this and it will work for a while, but will not those who have jail-breaked their i-pods or i-phones just find a new way to acquire the services a jail-breaking provides.

My question is, would you have to PAY for them to unlock your phone/ipod?

They want more than your money, they want to control your user experience. If you jail break it they're no longer in control of the device.

I always get a kick out of companies trying to do things like this.
They're only preventing the script kiddies and more casual hackers from exploiting it right away...it will be broken and it will eventually be easy enough for everyone to do.

But the walled garden is just the Apple mentality...one could say that's the mentality that almost put them out of business and made Bill Gates the richest man in the world.

A small part of me (who am I kidding, almost all of me) hopes they get put out of business. This is really bullshit.

Meh...just think about it...it must be allowed under their EULA.
Don't blame the player, blame lazy consumers that keep mindlessly clicking the "I accept" button.

5 years ago, all of the carriers would sell you a phone that had some of it's key features locked out completely. (Think any Motorola phone that had Bluetooth for file transfers.) If you didn't like it, you went online and paid someone for a copy of the un-gimped software so you could use all the phone you paid for.

Today, Apple sells you a phone that has all of it's features available. They restrict what software you can run on it, but if you don't like it, you can go get a free jailbreak and get around it.

How are the two any different? To this DAY Verizon STILL sells phones that have their own bloatware installed, or have physical features disabled unless you pay them extra.

But yeah, Apple's the asshole, right?

Right before the latest Droids came out, it was discovered if you tried to root the operating system (which was encouraged since it was 'open'), you'd brick it and have to send it back to Motorola to be fixed. Again, Motorola controlling what software you use.

Android is popular, but splintering. Part of the problem with it being open is that carriers and get inside it an lock it down if they want. It's already happening. HTC no longer contributes code to the Android codebase. They simply take the base Android OS and add proprietary shit that the carriers want. It's no different than how it was before.

But Apple's the asshole, right?

Every carrier provides a pile of bloatware on their smartphones, not just Verizon. Some manufacturers have even gone that route, with Samsung selling their souls to Bing to have a big bright Bing-branded search bar on the main screen of their Android-powered phones.

It's just Apple being Apple.

I own a vintage Motorola StarMax (That's a computer, not a phone for you young-ens).
I keep it only because it's rare.
Apple briefly licensed Mac OS for installation by other manufacturers (Motorola in this case because they were Apple's main chip provider)...for less than a year IIRC.
It eventually skeeved Apple out because they weren't in control and no company has been allowed to license their software since.

This is no different.

(I also own an original Newton, a Mac IIsi and a Quicktake 100 since I brought up old Apple gear...love 'em or hate 'em, Apple has always kept their competition moving and that's a good thing)

Apple's always the assholes because their publicity spiel is always far more in the media then other companies.

It's always that way with them, they do one thing and it gets magnified 1000x because it's Apple and they are the assholes in all of this, but if Motorola, Samsung, LG, or RIM do it, it's just them protecting their products.

I personally wouldn't want a remote control brick option because of a jailbreak, but when you jailbreak you get free software that you have to pay for from the Apple Store, this also cuts down the monetary gain by Apple, of course its hardly any huge amount.
