I'd like to say I've slipped through death's grasp a few times; I flipped my car on Hwy 15 near Harrisburg PA when I was 18, I've been shot at and had rockets land 25m from me, destroying equipment all around me. My "most recent" scare was surfing during Hurricane Bill last year, I started to get up on a wave but ended up in a bad spot. I took a dive and ended up in the washing machine for a few minutes (as my girlfriend recounts). When I finally surfaced, I found myself in the trough, right before the waves break but in the spot where the water rushing back to the ocean made it a bitch to paddle in.

Your turn

Back when I worked on the ambulance, we got a call on the east side one night around 3 am. Two heroin addicts had ODed, one worse than the other. When we walked in, the more sober one pulled a 9mm out and had it 3 feet from my head because he thought we were cops.

We talked him down, but was that as close as I've been.

Ain't a good feeling, I'm with you on that one. In a situation like that, it's acceptable to pee a little.

Indeed. It's actually one of the reasons I got out of EMS as a profession. That event didn't bother me at the time as much as it should have, considering I was wearing a bulletproof vest and stab plate to work every day for $7.25/hour.

I'd have left to. At least in the Marines I got to shoot back, and had great benefits ;)

bullet proof vest =/= head protection

I'm well aware of what a BP vest can and can not protect against.

My point was that I wore that equipment because I worked regularly in areas where such protection was almost mandatory to not be injured, and that it wasn't worth it for that low pay.

Are you sure? You see...a bulletproof VEST, doesnt cover your HEAD. you see....it's just a vest, you dont wear a vest on your head, right? So why would a bullet fired at your head be stopped by a bullet proof VEST? IT WONT! So next time (you know, in this job you no longer have) make sure you wear a bullet proof burqa. True...it will seriously hinder any physical movements you need to make, but unless your shot through the eye-slits it shouldnt kill you.

the take-away lesson from all this, of course, is that vests are not worn on our heads.

(sorry, in an odd mood)

Oh...I have a near deather to add. Some prick in a pickup truck didnt see me riding my '75 honda CB550 cafe racer in san diego one day, and tried to merge through me into the left lane. Good thing my ride was fast as shit, or else he'd have sent me onto the garbage/tire littered shoulder at 80+mph, which would NOT have ended well for me.

i was at a neighbours house after school. heard a storm coming, so his mom walked me home. we were in my driveway (my driveway was an old tennis court, so its rather big) and on one end is a huge maple tree. we were under the tree when lightning struck it, which spread and hit me, but i guess not my friends mom. where the lightning hit also split off a tree limb, which landed on me, but didnt cause any severe damage, just a few fractured ribs. i was at a pontiac hospital for a while for observation. i remember being interviewed by various news outlets, CNN being one. how word got out, i havnt the slightest.

everything is fuzzy, because i dont remember much. i remember feeling this odd sensation, then coming to with a tree limb on top of me. it was such a surreal day.

Did you feel pain, or was it just something that knocked you out? Does it in any way affect you today?

Well I'm talking things like superpowers. Does he shoot lightning out of his fingers?

If a vat of nuclear waste was spilled on him at the same time, we all know he would have superpowers.

I was hit by a car at age 8, which wasn't a near death experience but it was the closest I've ever been. I broke no bones but I was hit very hard. My bookbag and puffy coat took most of the damage, I guess. I fainted after getting up, screaming, and falling down in a snow bank.
