Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology did a study of what they described as America’s 150 forgotten cities. The municipalities on their list were medium-sized and ranked by measurements that included poverty. The reason for their demise largely match the cities on the 24/7 Wall St list. The MIT research work goes beyond a mere list of statistics and points out reasons why some of these cities will never recover. In almost every case, tax bases have disappeared, which has undermined the ability of local governments to spend money on revitalization. Abandoned areas of these cities have high crime rates, which not only keeps people from relocating to these areas but is actually an incentive for them to move away. This in turn, leads to the image of these cities as desolate urbanscapes.

Having been to both Flint and Detroit in the past few years, my opinion is that Buffalo is much better off.

i havnt read it yet, but im going to assume flint and detroit are on there. ill post more after reading. just wanted to point out how predictable these have become. DING DING DING! flints getting ALOT better. the downtown has been completely redone with the massive expansion of UM-flint campus. its becoming a college town little by little. yes, the city still has some serious serious problems, but alas, if the campus keeps growing, and the college influence keeps up, the city will find its niche.

Buffalo's number one? I wouldn't protest at being on the list, but number one? Come on. As far as mentioning abandoned areas of the city... Go to the East Side, and then take a visit to the abandoned sections of Detroit, Philadelphia, Baltimore, etc. Those cities are far worse off in those areas. It's incredible how bad it is. Buffalo's abandonment is bad, yes, but it can't touch them (aesthetically, at least). lol Albany is on there. OK then.

people forget that while within the city limits of detroit are bleak, the county to the north that boarders the city limit of detroit is the richest in the nation. and while detroits losing people rapidly, the suburbs continue to explode.

Same here, with the suburbs gaining population while the city loses it (however, that only applies to a few suburbs; most of the villages are losing population as well). That doesn't seem to indicate that people are moving into the area at all, though; it seems they're just moving from the city to the suburbs, which doesn't really do anything other than shift people already there around, and many who leave the city move away from the area. Overall, the metropolitan populations of both WNY and Detroit have to be shrinking. I know Erie County, at least, lost about 50,000 people between 2000 and 2008, and the population decline is accelerating, not slowing. Yeah, Wayne County's losing population just as steadily, now that I looked it up.

Honestly is it much of a surprise? I bet one of the main reasons it is number one is because half the population from 1950 is gone, and I think that put a huge hurt on the city, or at least on that list at least.

It's not a surprise to be on that list, but the number one status is a surprise. I can't take it that seriously, though, because Albany is also on it.
