Post subject:  Ohio State dorks
Can somebody help me understand why Buckeye fans/alumni refer to their school as THE Ohio State University, with a huge emphasis on THE? I can't think of a good reason for it and it just comes off as kinda stupid to me. I could understand this in a state like California, for example. If the Cal fans/alumni referred to their school as THE University of California, it would still come as sort of arrogant, but at least I would understand that they were trying to differentiate themselves from the many other fine, big, prestigious universities in the state. This is not the case in Ohio. There are no other universities nearly as big, prestigious, well known or as athletically successful as OSU in Ohio. Are they so insecure that they are worried about the University of Akron becoming the top university in the state some time soon? Or Toledo? It's like me saying that I'm the greatest Sabres fan in the history of my neighborhood. Big deal. I'm the only Sabres fan in the history of my neighborhood.

The actual name of the school is The Ohio State University, so they're not adding anything there. It's just arrogance and cockiness. Same reason that twits from Miami say they're from 'The U'.

look, ohio state is a good school. it is. but yes, more so then any other university, there is a sense of entitlement and arrogance, with notre dame being a POSSIBLE exception. and, im a michigan fan, and im completely aware michigan has a high per-capita of douchebags around its fanbase as well.

On a side Note, the Hurricanes should refer to themselves as Miami of Florida, since Miami of Ohio was founded first.

that was the 1997 season when michigan won the rose bowl to win the national championship. the last time they won was in 2003.

yeah, i dont think nebraska would have had a prayer.

rely on a dumbass ryan leaf spiking a ball? the set the ball up with 2 seconds left. what else is he supposed to do? if were going to play that card, ill play washington state never should have been in that position because taylor pushed woodson over before catching the ball, an uncalled offensive pass interference card.

I always thought it was bullshit back then how the top ranked team always got an easier game than the second ranked team in the bowls.

thats not how it went. the rose bowl was the big 10 champs vs pac 10 champs. rankings had 0 to do with that match up.

michigan proved its worth beating 7 ranked teams that year, including 2 top 5 teams. so, if beating a number 8 team is an easy walk through the park, so be it, i guess.

peyton manning wasnt close to ryan leaf in college. yes, im aware how great manning is now, and how much dick leaf sucks for his next heroin batch. in college, and that year especially? manning wasnt better then leaf.

ill take a shared national championship. if thats something to use against a program, ill take it.
