I am having severe writer's block and I think everything sounds like shit.

Does anyone have any tips?

don't mention that you have interest in other fields. most schools want dedication to their programs. I know someone who conducted an interview for UB dental and they asked her why she wanted to be a dentist. She replied, "I wanted to be a vet but dental school is easier to get into." The interviews allowed her to pursue her veterinary school.

from one of my FB friends

Let's see... first, I'll just say that I really just have experience with science/engineering related grad statements, but I have a feeling that a lot of the general pointers are pretty universal. I'd say the most important thing is not to ...make it too dry (it can get boring if all you talk about is the technical jargon, not that you shouldn't include some to show you know your stuff), but make sure you keep it succinct and organized. The worst is when people ramble on and use wishy-washy examples. You should give them hard facts about your experience and what your (research) interests are to show they should be happy to have you in their program, but make sure to give it your own personal touch. Not sure if that helps at all, but good luck to your friend!

Hey, best advice I was given after bombing out on every law school app I did was from the city court judge at home. He read my personal statement and said "you were trying too hard, and it came off as pretentious and unbelievable." Be yourself when writing it. Allow your personality and drive to be reflected in your statement.

Call me this weekend if you still have writers block, I will try to help u out. I can give you a clear cut example of how not to write it :)

Maybe I could dig up my essay from my application for teaching school. Scratch that, I think all I have is a printed copy and I'm not typing it. But I'd say that be yourself advice is a really good idea. Just be honest with them and with yourself about why you're going into that field. Tell the story of why you're applying there and once you get going, it will probably start writing itself. I remember reading that paper of yours a few years back, and you had a real honest self-examination in there. Do the same here, unless the only reason you're going into your field is for the money.
