Even that article doesn't get it right. The Mayan calendar doesn't stop in 2012. The end of the current long count cycle ends in 2012. Then, a new long count cycle starts. It's no different than how we go from December 31st to January 1st and just start a new year. |

I remember my world civ teacher saying that the whole stigma with the Mayan calendar ending then was because of the 13th bakton (spelling way wrong, don't care to look it up ) was either beginning or ending and it was considered bad luck. Or something. It was like 3 years ago so I don't remember
